Chapter 23

Ladies and gentlemen, meet your judges, on the left we have Steve then we have Natasha and last but not least we have our very own coordinator David!" it's a good thing he doesn't know what we made, I wonder what he would do, would he make sure we won so that Marcy will have to kill or would he make sure that we would lose so there is no chance of Marcy escaping him.

The judges sat down in their seats and started eating. After having tasted one they would whisper discuss and write something down on a piece of paper beside them and move on to the next baked good. Our pinwheel was up last. I want to take it from them and run as far away so that they will never taste it so that they can never tell us if we win or not. But unfortunately, I can't. I want to win for my family but so many reasons I that keep me back.

My attention went back to the front when David stood up.

"We have the top three dishes and we would like to talk to those before we say who are the winners. Please come forward the team who made these delicious, chocolate fudge cookies." The red room immediately stepped forward; happy smiles bright on their lips.

"Coffee flavoured cake." This time it was the green team.

"And lastly the team who made these pizzas flavoured bread." I guess that's is our pinwheels. Must have been right and they don't know what pinwheels are. Sharing a glance with Marcy we stepped forward.

"Tell us a little about your dishes." The first judge, Steve, said and then all three sat back down in their seats. The first two seams talked and then finally it was our turn.

"While living in the outside world one of my favourite foods were Pin Wheels." I started. I got a look from Marcy when I said outside world, but I ignored her. I need them to think that we are happy that we know that the outside world is dangerous, and we will not talk about it, just like our birth families.

"My mother,"

"- birthmother." I quickly cut in, receiving another glare from Marcy which once again I ignored.

"My birth mother told me how to make these long ago, so we decided to go with it." She finished off.

"And what are they exactly girls?" This time it was Natasha talking.

"They are like bread rolls with ham cheese and herbs in and on it." I politely answered. I'm afraid of how interested they are. We can't win. I can't kill someone. I just can't. I will watch, I will eat, but I will not kill.

"ladies and gentlemen may we have your attention." Well, he already had everyone's attention but okay.

"In third place, we have the green team who made the coffee cake. In second place we have the red team who make the chocolate fudge cookies." Oh no. No, no, no. this is bad. We did too good.

"That means that the winners are the blue team who made the pinwheels. Please congratulate these teams and feel free to taste their amazing baking, it was a hard decision." Soon after the announcement, I was encircled by my family, all praising me and hugging me tightly. They must be so happy that I will be killing someone in front of all these people.

"Dad?" I finally managed to whisper out. He must have heard me as he looked down at me concerned.

"What is it darling?" he inquired pulling me into his chest into a comforting hug.

"I don't think I can kill someone tonight," I mumbled out, feeling tears threatening to come out.

He held me out at arms distance looking at me sternly. I made a mistake telling him. Obviously, I wouldn't be able to get out of this, what was I thinking. "Of course, you can, you'll do just fine. Remember that sooner or later you'd have to kill, be happy you have this opportunity here." I just nodded my head in answer. There is no fighting this. I glanced over at Marcy who was held tightly by David who smiled brightly. He knows that we won't kill anyone, and even then, there is no reason for him to keep his word.

We were led away by the crowd, all excited for the killing tonight and having dinner. But until then we have a few more hours to go. I looked over at Marcy, meeting her eyes. she nodded once and I knew what she was meaning.

"Hey had, is it alright if I celebrate with Marcy for a little bit? I will meet up with you tonight?" He gave me a curt nod and I bounced over to where Marcy and David stood. I needed to act happy that I won, I need them the think that there is nothing to worry about and that I will be there tonight, no matter what.

"fine, but if you're not back in an hour you will be punished." I heard David say before stalking off just as I arrived.

"Unfortunately he won't see me in an hour, and so he will be unable to punish me. Let's go." Marcy stated walking off in the opposite direction from the others. Once we were sure that we were out of sight we started sprinting like our lives depended on it. Because they kinda do. we will be punished so bad if we are discovered and I doubt I'd get out of killing an innocent. Knowing my family they would make me do it, they would force my hand just like the first time with that girl, Dawn, where they forced my hand to cut meat from her body.

it took several minutes of hard out sprinting until we made it to a tall wire fence. breathing heavily I reached out but Marcy stopped me.

"Wait, it's an electric fence. We had them back home." Marcy suddenly started looking around.

"So how do we get out?"

"Easy, we switch it off." And that when all hell broke loose. Once Marcy turned it off an alarm went off. Shit. There goes our strength and we won't have much time to run. We shared a panicked look before we climbed through the fence and into the woods on the other side.
