Lance woke up with the annoying rapid noise of cars honking, and when he opened his eyes some sense of familiarity hit him, maybe with a small hint of nostalgia and he looked around, finding himself in an apartment. All he knew was the fact that he knew those dirty curtains, grey walls, and the smell of something burning blocked the small amount of oxygen that depressing apartment provide for him. Suddenly his vision start swimming and his knees buckle under him once again, landing on the dusty carpet with a small thud. His throat felt dry as a desert and it was like his lungs were split into pieces. Lance hunched his shoulder, body trembling as a small speck of dust went into his lungs, not helping the horrible sensation of-
Dry coughs escaped from his lips and lance let out a choked gasp as he out the two and two together and he got hit by dread.
“n-no. Not again.” the words came out a gasp and lance let out a pant, his vision going blurry, which he was sure it wasn’t because of the dust in the air or that burning smell or hell even the fact he had cancer-
Again.
The coughs turned to an even more violent level and lance didn’t need to look up in the internet to know what was going to happen next. His muscles ached and a bile raised up his throat, the sharp taste of metal lingering on his tongue as he watched the red liquid flow down his mouth to the wooden floor quietly.
Once this turned into a daily routine, something normal, but not now.
Not after he died because of this. Lance refused to let his second chance slip away from his grasp. Not like this. Not like-
“LANCE!” a scream ripped through the silence like a dagger through a sack of gold, dripping out the unsaid words and lance couldn’t help but let out a relieved sob after hearing that deep, familiar voice, soon for another cough to cut it off for him.
“k-keith.” lance mumbled, trying to stand but once again his knees betrayed him, leaving him sitting on the floor pathetically. He laid his head on the floor, observing the room silently as it was the last thing he was going to see and even though the gloomy room had nothing to offer, he needed some details. Those stuff always managed to ground him. So he kept his eyes on the static on the tv screen as the edge of his sight greyed out, and then black surround all of it and he slipped back into the darkness.
Lance woke up with cold sweat, nothing but a big gasp escaping from his lips and he gulped the cold air around him, even though he didn’t need that anymore. That thought made him sigh and glance down at his hands. Now they seemed a little...greyed out… unreal... and sometimes lance found himself unable to touch or fell off his chair simply by phasing through the chair unintentionally. He grit his teeth, body slightly trembling and he was so deep in his thoughts he didn’t realize a demon was next to him. Well, not until the demon clasped a hand on his shoulder, making a pair of blue eyes snap up to meet violet.
“nightmares?” keith asked and much to his surprise lance found a hint of worry in that voice, making him feel something he didn’t felt for a long time and it seemed so, so familiar, yet lance couldn’t put his finger on it. It took a few more moments for the brunet to realize keith was probably expecting an answer from him.
“maybe.”
“lance.” lance let out a sigh, oh how much he wanted to smack the demon, but well that wouldn’t be fair, he couldn’t blame someone for caring...for him. That was something that didn’t happen to lance for years...maybe decades after his death. His family mourned for him for months, and then he was to be forgotten like a broken pencil.
That wasn’t fair.
“it’s nothing, i just...it happens over and over, keith. My cancer. How they didn’t take it seriously until i was at the final stages of it. Or how i had to die alone curled up in an apartment while choking on my own blood.” lance mumbled, running a shaky hand through his short locks. He didn’t dare a single glance at the one beside him.
“it hurt a lot. I mean, i expected the painful death and all but…” the spirit let out a dry chuckle, eyes far, far away.
“...i didn’t know i’d die alone…” before he could even get the chance to explain why he was being childish right now lance was engulfed into an embrace and he let out a yelp, eyes wide with confusion.
“you’re not alone anymore, sharpshooter.” lance shook his head, pulling away to stare right into keith’s eyes. No, he didn’t understand. Keith wasn’t a spirit, he didn’t know how it felt. It was like having someone you love with you and being alone at the same time, lance came up with that thought when he woke up tired, when his hands started to glitch and the spoon he was holding slipped out of his grip. If he didn’t do anything about it any sooner, he’d soon be nothing but dust, a memory left forgotten to the wind.
“i’m fading away, keith!” lance yelled, tears stinging at his eyes and the buried emotions came back up one by one and he couldn’t keep it together anymore. It was too much. Too.much.
“i’ll be all by myself again!” lance let out a sob and keith watched with wide eyes as his hand slipped right through lance’s shoulder as if he was nothing but thin air. He wanted to say something, anything to make it better, make the wound hurt less, stop the bleeding, but lance wasn’t finished.
“once, just once in my life i found real friends. I had people who CARED! And-For the first time…” lance trailed off, head lowering so his short locks hang in front of his face, hiding his eyes from the view. Keith watched quietly with a tearful gaze, waiting for the spirit to continue.
“...for the first time i fell in love with the right person.” lance’s eyes flickered up to meet keith’s and when he put the two and two together, eyes widened with nothing but surprise. Lance didn’t mean that person was keith, right?
Right?
That was probably a stupid move, keith was good at reading body language but this time the possibility that he read it right was slim and keith didn’t seem to care as he reached up, cupping lance’s face and then everything was a flash, and soon a pair of soft lips pressed against lance’s, making him freeze. This was too good to be true. However after a few second he realized this was indeed true and a single tear slid down his cheek as he closed his eyes, kissing back the demon.
The right person he fell in love with.
“whatever happens,we’re not gonna leave you, ok?” keith mumbled between pants, forehead resting against lance’s faded out one.
Lance allowed himself to believe that. Even if it was to last for a few days. So he let out a soft sigh, voice a whisper against keith's lips, tone low, only meant for the asian to hear.
“ok.”
