There's been moments like this. A lot of them, where lance mcclain, the current red paladin of voltron, the sharpshooter, had regretted his life choices.

But this one, took the fruit basket.

He didn't know much about his childhood, as mama and papa refused to talk about it more than neccessary. lance suspected the hospital wristband he found hidden in mama's box under her bed had something to do with that. There was nothing unusual about it. If you'd ignore the fact that messy handwriting, shifted into a name he was familiar with.

Lance mcclain.

His childhood had been nothing but a blurr, vague shapes and colours here and there, but not enough details to give a clue about the events. Though there was this one memory he remembered clearly, so without a doubt he cherished it like tressure. Note the fact that this memory, bore one of the wrong choices he made in his life.

It was thanksgivings, mom and dad left him and his siblings home to buy some stuff for thanksgivings. Long story, short, lance tried to make the turkey himself, unaware of the fact that the turkey he was filling up with cotton candies was actually a chicken.

He got grounded for a week after he almost burn down the house.

At least that time the situation hadn't gotten this fucked up in a span of a few second. And the worst part? All he could do was to watch as the black paladin held onto his hand, short, shallow breaths escaping from his lips. This was unlikely, really. Keith kogane, the black paladin, hotheaded, distant samurai, had fear shining brightly through his eyes as he stared down at lance, who seemed a little worried at the situation at hand.

It all depended on keith's hands, one grabbing at the ledge as he tried to steady lance at the same time. The only thing keeping lance from plummeting to the ground was keith, who had turned pale as a sheet and from the not so subtle tremble of his body, lance could guess that he couldn't keep this position any longer. So ofcourse, keith didn't have the strength to throw lance up there, and lance couldn't climb up without losening keith's grip on the ledge.

He weighed the black paladin down like a giant, heavy boulder. Lance felt his stomach clench when an idea clicked through his mind. A crazy idea, but if keith'd survive it'd worth it. And finally they'd get even, right? At that one mission this stupid, arrogant dumbass pushed him out of one of the galra's reach and got injured himself. If lance remembered correctly, it took a few weeks for the asian to get out of the pod.

Lance never got over it, not really. But atleast they'd get even.

"Keith" his voice came a quiet whisper, and keith's attention snapped back to the cuban, who stared back with a sad smile on his face.

"Keith let me go." Keith's eyes widened in horror. "What?"

"Keith please-" keith cut him off, the horror now morphing into rage, eyes blazing. But if lance squinted hard enough, he'd see something stronger than that rage, tucked away at the back of that swirling sea of violet.

Fear.

"No." The black paladin shook his head, staring at the cuban as if he gone crazy. Which wasn't far from truth.

"Don't." His voice broke, but he managed to keep his angry fecade. Lance almost smirked. The guy tried so hard to be tough, to be strong, unaware of the fact that he already had the strength. He just had a big heart, that's it. Though he never admit it, lance saw it.

"Quit acting like a fucking dumbass, lance." Lance clenched his jaw, throwing the weak male a glare. Concern creeped back into him, when the hell did keith got so pale???

Lance clicked his tongue in annoyance. Stubborn, He thought. For a moment he was quiet, before shifting his gaze upward to once again lock eyes with keith. He looked scared, weak. Vulnurable.

Lance clenched his jaw and braced himself. this calls for drastic messures.

"Keith." All he got for response was a dry cough, though those purple eyes locked on the tanned male. A silent gesture to tell him he's listening. And that intensity of his gaze seemed to be too much for both of them. staying focused while there's a gaping wound on your left shoulder couldn't be an easy task.

"I'm not letting you-" keith choked, and much to lance's disbelief, he could see tears building up at the corner of keith's eyes. His heart broke into pieces, and it hurt to see keith like that. It felt like each shard of his broken heart has went and dug themselves in his organs.

"I won't, lance." Lance's pulse spiked up. He always knew he cared about this dumbass a little...differently. he knew it wasn't the buddy love like the one with hunk, or the love he held for the team. And now, knowing that keith kogane actually cared about him, just a boy from cuba, made his stomach clench. Even when keith didn't cared about him like lance did for him-

Another cough snapped him back to reality. Lance squeezed keith's hand, eyes taking in every detail he could find on keith. This would be the last time...

"I'm sorry." Lance murmured, losening his grip on keith and before the male could even comprehend, wind swished past him. gravity pushed him to the ground, where he and death would have a nice chat.

It was as if everything came into slowmotion. lance's eyes stung and droplets of tears flew before him, glinting with different specks of colours as his life flashed before his eyes.

"LANCE!" The last thing the red paladin heard was keith's scream, and something solid hit his back before white filled his vision.

...i love you.
