"You little monstrous child, why do you keep ruining my life!" My mother screamed at me. Her face distorted and grey. Worms came out of her face and her eyes where black.
"You can't even leave me alone when I'm dead" she said, picking up my box of necklaces and earrings. She examined it with a smirk.
"Alexander gave this to me on our first anniversary, and I was stupid enough to give it to you" she snarked, still looking at the porcelain box.
"He is my father" I said lowly. "And you killed him!" My mother screamed while throwing the box at my face.
I woke up panting. The nightmare had felt so real. Tears where running down my cheeks, and I felt like I could barely breathe. I stumbled down the stairs, walking to Gilbert's room. He was usually awake during the nights, as I knew he couldn't sleep.
But what I found in his bedroom shocked me. A sleeping Gilbert. I desperately needed someone to comfort me and hug me and just be there for me, but I decided to let him sleep.
I walked back out to the living room. I sat down in the comfiest chair we owned and laid back, pulling a sweater over my body. Quickly I fell asleep.
"Wake up, Abby" Gilbert said as he shook me awake. "I'm awake" I said groggily. "Why did you sleep here?" Gilbert asked confused. "Uh, I was reading the," I looked around for something and found a book lying on the table "the Phoenix and the carpet and I must have fallen asleep" I lied. I hate lying to Gilbert, but I didn't want to tell him this. How could I? He didn't even know about how my mother was abusive if you could even call it that.
He stood up as he seemed to buy what I said. I walked up stairs and got dressed. While brushing my hair I looked over to the box that held all my necklaces. I shuddered as the memories from the nightmare came flooding in.
After about 10 minutes I was ready to leave. Walking to schools was over quickly as I ran most of the part. Jane walked over to me and gave me a tight hug. "How are you?" She asks me, her voice laced with sympathy. I had never really talked to Jane before, but it was something about her. "I'm alright I guess" i answered, unintentionally lying.
She nodded while smiling, "well if there's anything, you know where to find me" she said, grabbing my arm and leading me to the other girls. They where already talking about something so we just joined the conversation. Well I was barely listening as I was staring into the ground.
The bell rang and we walked in. I sat on my usual spot behind besides Jane and for the first time we actually conversed. Jane is actually very kind and funny, much to similar to her older brother.
"Is the class boring you miss?" Mr. Philips said as he knocked his hind on my desk, waking me up in an instant. I must have fallen asleep since I barely slept during the night. "No, it's not. Sorry sir" I said looking down at the desk.
The other students laughed, and Mr. Philips walked away triumphant. What a disgusting man. "Out of the 7 dwarfs, Abby's the sleepy one" Billy said, making everyone laugh. I turned around, staring right into his eyes. If looks could kill, he would be as dead as mr. Philips heart.
I turned back around, pretending like I did not care. But I did care. I had began to trust and warm up to Billy. Hell I liked him. And now he does this, he is apparently not the boy I knew.
Jane stroked my back "don't listen to them" Jane said as she glared at her brother. Class continued as normal, mr. Philips looking at me occasionally to make sure I was awake.
"Lunch" he called out, just as I finished the math tasks. Everybody eagerly got out their foods, comparing them with each other. I took out my lunch, which Gilbert had made for me. It was a cheese sandwich, a red apple and some almonds.
"What do you have, Abigail?" Diana asked. By that I knew she meant what I had to share. "A bag of almonds" I said as I took it out and placed it in the middle of the table. In the pile we had some cookies, a few carrots, pear slices, cherries and now my almonds.
We ate our food before chatting about everything from dresses to boys. After a while we went outside. We were sat at the bench while I braided Ruby's hair into a half up half down with French braids. Pulling it together with a black lace I had in the pocket of my dress.
"Wow, it's beautiful Abigail" Anne said. Both Tillie, Jane and Diana nodded in agreement. Josie standing bitterly on the side, hating that someone other than her was getting the attention.
Ruby was suddenly blushing and giggling. I looked to where she was looking and my confusion cleared up. Gilbert was standing there waving at us. Or me. "I'll go see what he wants" I mumbled as I walked over to him.
"What is it?" I asked. "What happened in class today?" He answered with a question. "Oh no, I am not talking about this here" I said, a little more angry than anticipated. Gilbert looked taken aback, since I'm usually not this angry.
As I walked back to the girls, Billy walked up to me. Now without his friends. "Hey" He said casually as if nothing happened. I rolled my eyes, not wanting to start something right now. He apparently saw the eye roll and grabbed my hand. "Hey why are you mad?" He asked worriedly.
I ripped my hand away from his grip "Why I'm angry?!" I exclaimed angrily. "You humiliated me in front of the entire class! Even after we became friends, at least that's what I thought".
By now everyone was staring at us. "It was just a silly remark" he said while scratching his neck, obviously embarrassed. "The boys where expecting me to say something". This one I didn't expect. He didn't say it because he was just rude or whatever. He did it to please the others, he did it so he could be more popular.
Suddenly my hand was in the air and I slapped him. I could hear a loud gasp come from the 'crowd' watching us. "You selfish, horrid boy. You absolutely disgust me" I said shocked at both what he said and what I did. I gave Billy one last look before walking back into the classroom, the eyes of the other kids following me.
When school ended I ran away from the school. Leaving everyone behind, not caring that I forgot just about everything. My basket, my coat and my hat was laying at the school. I had to get out of there.
When I entered the woods, all I could see was snow and trees. Suddenly everything started spinning. I stopped and leaned over against a tree, gasping for air. The old feeling of not enough air in my lungs was back. This time it was different. It felt like I had lost something important, that was supposed to be there.
I sat down against the tree, cupping my head with my hands. While counting my breaths a voice I could recognize started speaking.
"We have to stop meeting like this"
