PROLOGUE
I never thought about my life, before I became a ranger. whenever I look back on it tears sprout to my eyes and I can't stop them. My childhood was full of things that most people never see in their whole life's... that was why I was chosen as a ranger.
I was put in the ward of battlefield fief, given the name by being the battle ground of about half of Aruelen's wars. I looked up to my best friends, Jonathon and brie, Jonathon always treated me as his little sister and when ever I was in need he was by my side. Brie was the bestest friend I could ever have, I saw to her as my little sister and we shared the same level of respect with each other.
One day when I was 11 one of the other wards lost it and tried to kill me in my sleep, I kicked him off of me, grabbed my cloak in less than a second and leaped out the door. I ran to the only place I knew I would have an advantage, the forest. She trailed behind me and once I finally reached the gate the guards moved to stop us but were to slow. I pushed away their weapons and they fell to the ground. I ran to the forest and tripped, in a matter of seconds the ward was upon me.
She leaped onto me and held a knife over her head, I held my eyes opened and tears flooded into my eyes. I screamed but it did no good, we were a good half hour away from the castle. Then I saw a flash of green and she was hurled off of me. I gasped and jumped up, not knowing what to do. Then I did the first thing that came to mind, I scrambled up the nearest tree as high as I could get. I stared down at my ward mate and made out a ranger.
I wiped the tears from my eyes. The ranger looked up at me and smiled, "can you please come down?" he said to me. I stared down at him then shrugged and slid down from the tree. He hesitated and walked toward me carefully, I grinned at him and giggled. "You seem afraid." I said giggling once again, he picked me up and I gave him a confused look but tried to hide it, he saw it and smiled. "don't be afraid," he said putting me back down, "I am your father." he said in a whisper touching my cheek.
I stared up at him and was about to flood out questions at him but he put a finger on my lips and smiled. "We will meet again echo," he said, "One day I'll tell you everything, just have the patience." and with that he ran off.
Thinking about that memory was just the most frustrating. It's been 17 years and I still haven't even been given a hint of who he is. But being chosen a ranger was the worst!
Me, Jonathon and Brie wore matching outfits. I wore my favorite knee length boots with my black leggings and threw on my lime green top. Brie wore the exact same shirt but in pink matching knee length boots and black leggings. while Jonathon wore his regular pants and boots but his shirt had a pink circle on the left of his chest and a lime green circle on the right of his chest.
We walked to the barons office together with the other 4 wards behind us. We got in a line and of course I was last while Jonathon was in front of me and Brie was at the front. Brie joined scribe school and Jonathon joined battle school. I sighed as Jonathon grinned back at me, you can do it, he mouthed.
I took a breath and stepped forward, "I am echo, my lord." I said with absolutely no confidence in my voice but my face said it all, I was ready. The baron stared at my with an eyebrow raised and I sighed realizing what he was about to say. I closed my eyes tight as he said, "last name?" the response he got was a soft, high pitched, squeak.
I opened my eyes and stared at him glossy eyes and his glare softened. "Oh... well then." he said clearing his throat. "Do you perhaps know anything at all about your parents?" he said in a soft voice. "Y-yes," I said and hesitated. "He was a ranger my lord." there were some gasps from the craft masters and giggles from a few of the other wards.
The baron eyed her, "And how do you know this?" he said in a suspicious tone. I gasped and put a hand over my mouth. I wasn't supposed to say that. If word got out my father would hate me for eternity! "I have already said to much my lord I can't say any more." I said with fear in my eyes. The baron stared down at me, his eyes full of curiosity. "Very well, lets continue shall we?"
"Diplomatic service, my lord." I said with sudden confidence. Lady Gwendolyn eyed me and replied after a few seconds, "She doesn't look anything like a courier my lord." she said not daring to look me in the eyes. "Well, any second choices," the baron said, with pity in his eyes. I opened my mouth but my words failed me. I tried again and said, "I didn't really think that far, I'm sorry my lord." I said, my eyes dropping from his gaze. He sighed and then was startled by the head chef, sir charlie.
"Hey you were the one who caused that catastrophe last year in my kitchen!" He bellowed. I opened my mouth to protest but enstead said, "Well yeah but-" he smacked me on the head with the wooden spoon he carried with him 24/7. I yelped and then lady Gwendolyn said "weren't you the one who scared 6 of my couriers a few years ago!" she said in a voice a little over her regular one. I didn't get time to reply once all of the craft masters started babbling about the chaos I had caused in the castle.
"STOP!" the baron yelled. "All of you!" I let relief flood through me but quickly hid it before anyone noticed. "My lord!" a deep voice said behind the room. "may I talk to you over here?" the voice said again. the baron obeyed without answer and walked over to the ranger of the fief, Simon. after a few minutes the baron boomed. "enjoy yourself, all who have been chosen. And echo?" I nodded and he said. "you have been accepted as a ranger."
