I was in some kind of facility. I don't remember the purpose of this facility, but I remember how it felt. Like a prison. Survival of the fittest was rule number one. If you weren't strong enough to handle a fight, you better hide and pray that no one finds you. Escape was impossible. some have tried, but all have failed and inevitably wounded up dead.
I'm not much of a fighter but I am okay at hiding when I need to, so I tend to stay low and just do as I'm told. Whether my actions are right or wrong, is not for me to decide. Not if I want to stay alive. Despite what you have just heard, the place actually isn't all that bad as long as you do as they say. You get food, a bed, roof over your head and protection from outside threats. It's tough and some days are worse than others, but I manage to get by each day almost without getting into trouble.
What, you thought that just because I kept to myself, did as I was told and never tried to escape or rebel that I wouldn't get into trouble anyway? Like every society there are the upper class, the strong fighters who remain loyal, the rebels, those who tries to escape, the leader, the one that rules over all of us, the troublemakers, those who cause trouble to others and the working class, like me who stay low, work hard and try to get to the next day with as few bruises as possible.
The troublemakers are the reason that I get into trouble as often as I do. I guess it's not really a surprise for anyone that the troublemakers are the ones getting me into trouble. The troublemakers are good at hiding and are usually working together with the rebels to try and escape. They both ask us from the working class to help them out by getting them intel and doing a bit of sabotage where we can.
In the beginning a lot of people wanted to join the rebels but they weren't good enough at hiding so eventually they were caught, brought to the leader and finally killed in front of everybody. I was born in this facility and I have never seen the outside world, but it is my dream to one day get outside and live in the real world.
The rebels keep trying to recruit me into helping them, but I refuse every time. That's why the troublemakers are after me all the time. When the rebels fail in recruiting someone the troublemakers find that person and do everything they can to recruit said person themselves. Most of us know that the troublemakers will eventually get us killed, either by them or by the leader when they find out that we were going to rebel, so when they come and talk with one of us we just do as they say to avoid getting caught. All except me.
I don't want to join the rebels and I have no intention of letting myself get killed because of them. I have to admit, sometimes it does get a bit rough. As I said, I'm not a fighter so when the troublemakers come to me and I deny them they tend to want to fight me, and I always lose the fight. Luckily they can't do any real harm to me since it would get noticed by the higher ups and then they would get caught as well, so it's not that bad.
I sit up in my bed and look around. The others are slowly starting to wake up as well. The sun is rising behind the tower. I walk out of the room to get some breakfast. The working class always wake up early to eat and then we go straight to work until lunch. It's hard work for some, but not for me. All I have to do is clean up the halls and sometimes look after the children if their caretaker is ill.
As I'm washing the floors someone comes over to me. "Hey, why don't you join us? We're having a meeting tonight after everyone has gone to bed, under the bridge. You should join us." It's Marly, he's one of the rebels put he's supposed to be a worker like the rest of us. "I'll think about it." I tell him and go back to work. For lunch we get a piece of bread with some meat on it. It's not much but I'm not complaining. After lunch we all go back to work again until dinner.
After dinner is over we have free time until we go to bed. I like to enjoy the sun so I tend to sit in the barracks and look out the window until the sun sets. I thought about what Marly said but despite my will to get out into the real world I decided to stay here. Nighttime came and we all went to bed, or most of us at least. As soon as the guards had gone to bed and all the lights were out I heard someone walking around.
