The Reid Method: A New Chapter
Chapter Eleven- All We Can Do Is Keep Breathing
Henry and Jonah walked through the front door of the house. The nanny was upstairs taking care of the twins. Jonah put his schoolbag on the floor next to the door and went over to the t.v. while Henry went into the kitchen to get them a snack.
The phone rang on the counter in the kitchen and Henry went to get it, picking it up and answering it. "Hello?"
"Hey, Buddy" it was his dad on the other line. Something was wrong though. His voice was hoarse and he was speaking even quieter than he normally did.
"Dad?" Henry questioned, straining to hear him. "What's wrong?"
"I need to talk to you and your brother" Spencer replied, his voice cracking from straining his throat.
Henry sprinted into the living room where Jonah was sitting on the couch. He put the phone on speaker.
"It's dad" Henry whispered to Jonah.
"Hey, Dad" Jonah said, wondering what was going on.
"Hi boys" Spencer said, coughing. When he was finished he tried again, "I just wanted you to know that I love you and I'm very proud of both of you."
"Dad, what's going on?" Jonah asked, worried.
Spencer coughed again. "I got to go" he hung up the phone.
Henry and Jonah stared at the phone, still wondering what was going on.
Spencer thought about when he went into work this morning. How normal it all seemed, like a typical day. Except he had no idea what this day would bring and how it would turn out like this in just a few hours.
"Last night twenty five people checked into emergency rooms in and around Annapolis." J.J. said. The team was gathered in the round table room along with Dr. Linda Kimura, an expert in pathology. "They were all at the same park after 2 p.m. yesterday, within ten hours the first victim died. We now have twelve dead."
"Lung failure and black lesions" Morgan read the file. "Anthrax?"
"Anthrax doesn't kill this fast" Spencer pointed out.
"This strain does" Doctor Kimura said.
"What are we doing about potential targets? Airports? Malls? Trains?" Prentiss asked.
"There's a media blackout" Hotch answered.
"We're not telling the public?" Prentiss questioned.
"If this does get out whoever did this could go underground and discard the sample. We may never find them" Spencer explained.
A tray of pills was placed on the table in front of everyone.
"This is cipro" Hotch said. "Everyone needs to take it before we go."
"We don't know if it's effective against this strain but it's something" Doctor Kimura explained.
Everyone took the cipro.
Hotch told Spencer that he should go to the hospital with Doctor Kimura and interview the victims. He stopped by J.J.'s office to get the victim's files. "Hey, do you have those files I've been looking for?"
She put her hand on the files. "Yeah, right here." she went back to looking at her computer. "Did you get the memo from the director? Emails and office calls are being monitored."
