Chapter 20: Journey’s POV

My mom’s stomach was starting to show and she had been smiling more, being happier with my dad. My mom seemed ecstatic about something but I didn’t know exactly what. They were talking about a baby but I wasn’t exactly picking up on what they were saying.

Then one day I was quickly dropped off at 5 in the morning at Uncle CC’s house and I could hear my mother’s wails of pure pain. I stood there till Uncle CC picked me up and let me inside and put me to bed in the guest room.

When I woke up the next morning I walked out of my room, fully clothed and I could sense something wrong in the living room. Aunt Melanie looked upset and distracted a bit. I walked over to Uncle CC. “Uncle CC what’s wrong?” I asked. I saw a sad face on him and he shook his head.

“It’s nothing.” He promised me. I frowned. “Don’t worry about it.” He told me and I nodded, still not fully convinced with his answer. Soon I was picked up by my dad. Only, my dad. He had the same face. Sad and far distant. I didn’t say anything during the drive home and I went straight to my room afterwards.

I wish I was smart enough to realize what happened that night till now.

Present Time

“Wake up Journey!” Parker exclaimed. I was back at home, we had two more days left before the 8 of the kids had to go back to the boarding school. I laughed as I kissed his head. “I don’t want Lyric stealing the pancakes.” He frowned. I smiled.

“I think you should be more worried about Caleb!” I laughed as I got out of bed and walked to the kitchen everyone was sitting around, eating what was ever on their plate. Well Caleb and Ashley were eating out of a bowl. I think you can guess what’s in that bowl.

I grabbed a plate and sat down on the couch and started to cut into my pancake. I was still confused by the flashback last night and it wouldn’t go away. I shook my head slightly and almost unnoticeable from all the commotion. I could sense someone looking at me.

I looked up and I saw Dad glance at me. He knew something was wrong. I sighed and I set my plate down on the side table and I walked over. “Dad is something wrong?” I asked.

“I could ask you the same think.” He said and I ran a hand through my hair.

“I just had a dream last night that’s all.” I said, brushing it off.

                “What was it?” He asked.

“It was more like a flashback but it was about 12 years ago, that night where you went to the hospital with mom.” I said. Dad’s eyes widened and he shook his head.

“Oh your mom just had a bad stomach virus that’s all.” He shrugged. What a terrible lie! I made my eyes look stern and he sighed. “Come with me.” He beckoned, standing up from the bar chair and walking towards the stairs. I followed until we reached mom and his room. He opened the door and he walked to a book on a shelf and he slipped it out. I frowned as he sat on the bed and patted the spot next to him.

                “What’s this?” I asked him.

“Your mom was pregnant with a boy. We named him Luke.” He said softly, opening to the first page revealing a photo of a baby. On a small piece of paper it read: 6 pounds 2 ounces. “We were both excited for our second. We were ready. We were ready for you to have siblings, grow up with a younger brother.” He said.

                “What happened?” I asked.

“A doctor put him for adoption. He tried to cover it up saying that he was so small that he died during birth.” He explained. “He sold him for some money.” He said.

“How did you find out the truth?” I asked.

“We found the signed documents in a folder he left on the table in your mother’s room.” He sighed. He flipped to the next page, revealing it to be blank. “We made this scrapbook just like was did for you.” He said. “Although you filled yours up.” He said, closing the book.

“Do you know where Luke is?” I asked and he shook his head.

“He’s gone. We don’t know where he is.” He sighed. “I just wished he was here with me. Who knows who he sold him to?” He sighed. “I want to find him one day.” My dad smiled. I would like to see my son once more.” He shook his head, standing up and putting his book away.

I left the room and I sighed as I walked into mine. It seems like my family is always screwed over. My grandpa is psychotic, I have no idea what happened to my mom’s mom, and my parents lost their second born child. Can one thing turn out right?

Nothing has ever worked out in this family. It seems like at this point that my dad’s family is sane and so are my aunts and uncles. I heard a knock at the door and I could hear my family outside. I walked downstairs to get it and I gasped to see who was standing at the entrance.

                Danny Worsnop.

“UNCLE DANNY!” I squealed happily as he pulled me in for a hug.

“Merry Christmas Journey!” He laughed happily.

“What are you doing on this side of the country?” I asked in shock.

“I hadn’t seen you in such a long time! I knew you were in town for only a little while longer before you had to head back to that boarding school and I wanted to drop by and see my little Joy!” He said as he pulled away from the hug.

“Well come in! I can get the others there…” I stopped as I looked at the sliding glass door as Uncle Danny walked in, shutting the front door behind him. I saw everyone throwing soccer balls at Caleb. Even his dad was.

“Is this a normal activity for them?” Uncle Danny asked.

“Yes but I haven’t seen something like this for a while.” I laughed as I opened the door and walked out. “Hey guess who’s here!” I yelled happily. Everyone turned their way to see Danny smiling and waving at them.

“Danny what are you doing here?” My dad asked with a touch of happiness in the question.

“I wanted to see Journey and the others before they left again.” Danny smiled.

“We should do something with you tonight!” My dad smiled.

“Yeah I mean everything gets a bit funner when I’m around.”
