When they finally got to school, Gerard did as he had promised Mikey and put Nell in his pale grey backpack where he had his colouring books and pencils. His backpack was covered in multicoloured buttons that Mikey had sewn on for him. He had always liked the way buttons looked and how they felt and he was constantly insisting that he had them everywhere. It took Mikey and their father months to convince Gerard that sewing buttons all over his bed was a terrible and impractical idea.
Gerard was sat in his fourth lesson of the day, algebra, needless to say he wasn't having any fun at all. All the numbers and letters were confusing him since he had never actually gotten out of his headspace for school that morning. He was just so tired and shaken up from the constant nightmares that, for the last few day, Mikey had just let him stay little for school.
"And that would be what? Mr Way. Why don't you give me the answer," the teacher said and almost the whole class turned and looked in his direction expecting him to give an answer. Gerard had no idea what to do, he didn't even know what the teacher had been talking about for the last half an hour. Luckily, he didn't have to answer whatever question the teacher had asked him because a woman knocked on the door.
"I need to speak to Gerard Way," she stated simply and Gerard grabbed his bag and made his way towards the lady in the doorway. She was short, just shorter than Gerard,so about 5"7, and had a joyful smile. Her eyes were a dark brown much like her hair and her skin was a tan olive colour that Gerard was slightly jealous of. He, much like his brother and both their parents, had the palest skin ever that could burn even when he was wearing multiple layers of factor fifty sun cream.
Gerard followed this woman across the school and into a small office space. The walls were painted a shade of baby blue which Gee found rather calming and it contained three chairs in a circle-ish shape and another behind a desk on the other side of the room. In the middle of the room, there was a circular white fluffy rug on the floor and there was a small bookcase mounted on the wall by the door. Gerard looked around the room in awe, he'd couldn't remember being anywhere so beautiful since his childhood house that his mother had decorated.
The woman sat down on one of the three chairs in the not so circular circle and gestured for Gerard to sit on one of the other two chairs. He chose the chair closed to him and sat down with his back to the door. He was pleasantly surprised by how soft and comfortable the chairs were.
"Hello Gerard," the woman said. She was still smiling. "I'm Mrs Iero. I'm part of the pastoral support team here. Your brother, Mikey, has reached out to me multiple times during the past few days and asked me if I could please talk to you. He told me that you've been having constant nightmares and you don't really talk to anyone anymore. He's worried about you Gerard."
Gerard looked down at his backpack, silently wishing he could get Nell out of his bag. He didn't like people asking him questions about his nightmares, he didn't like talking about them at all. Mrs Iero went to speak again when someone burst through the door.
"Mom," the person said."Do you have the doctors note about my broken toe? I need it to get out of gym later. Oh sorry, I didn't know there was anyone else in here."
Mrs Iero continued to smile.
"Frank. What did I tell you about knocking? You're lucky it was me using this room and not Miss Matthews," She said.
The person who had burst through the door, who Gerard could only assume was Frank, mumbled an apology.
Mrs Iero smiled contently and began to speak again. "Sorry about that Gerard, this is my son Frank. Frank, why don't you sit here with Gerard while I go get the doctors note from the staff room. I'll be back in a jiffy" And with that she was gone.
Gerard continued to gaze longingly at his bag, desperately wanting to get Nell out and give her a huge hug.
"What's in your bag to make you look at it like that?" Frank asked.
Gerard just shrugged. He hadn't ever meant to stop talking, he just never felt like it anymore. Frank reached over and grabbed his bag.
"May I?" He asked and opened Gerard's bag anyway, not bothering to wait for a response. He pulled out a couple of colouring books and notebooks and then Nell.
Gerard hesitantly looked up at the boy who was occupying the chair next to him and he immediately felt his breath being taken away. Sat in front of him, well technically next to him, was the most gorgeous human being he had ever seen.
"Is this a camel?" Frank asked and Gerard nodded, a huge smile plastered on his face. Gerard had never met anyone who had correctly guessed that it was a camel on their first try. He made grabby hands toward the stuffed animal and when Frank gave it to him, he used his left arm to pull her close to his body and put his right thumb in his mouth while still smiling. Frank lent closer towards Gerard and gently pulled his thumb from his mouth. Gerard looked confused.
"Don't do that," Frank explained to Gerard. "It's bad for your teeth."
Gerard nodded to show that he understood and wrapped his other arm around Nell as well, hugging her closer to his body. The two boys just sat in science for a moment before Mrs Iero appeared back in the doorway, a small paper note in her hand. She gave it to Frank and he went to leave.
"Frank. Be polite and walk Gerard to his next lesson," Mrs Iero said. He nodded and he began to put Gerard's things back in his bag before picking it up and slinging it over his shoulder with his own bag. Then he held his hand out to Gerard, just like Mikey did every morning. Gerard took Frank's hand and they went to leave the office.
"Bye mom," Frank said and they walked into the corridor. Frank stopped, realising he had no idea where Gerard needed to go for his next lesson. Gerard sensed this and began gently pulling him in the direction of his next lesson, art. Art had always been Gerard's favourite subject, he got to colour all lesson and the teacher didn't care because it was technically art.
The rest of the day went agonisingly slowly for Gerard. After art he had lunch, then Geography and last he had gym, by far the worst lesson of the day in his opinion.Fact about me: I collect CDs.
