Not sick, ok maybe Phil's sick

Dan's POV

Phil has been acting weird today, and for Phil that might seem normal but even his weird is off. It started off when I woke up this morning before him and that never has happened. I didn't think much about it at the time because everyone deserves to sleep in time to time but it's odd to see from him.

At breakfast he barely touched his crunchy nut cereal. The single serving box and almond milk was unopened too, completely new and fresh. It's his favorite cereal and there is only 2 in the cereal mix packs we get it's odd not seeing him take more than a few bites.I notice when he brings his bowl over to the sink to start helping me do dishes. "Phil you don't have to stop eating your cereal because I start dishes remember." I say reaching over to rub his shoulder. I always try to give Phil light reminders that he can be his own person now and typically it works out quite smoothly.

"Mmm not that hungry, maybe later." He mumbles before rinsing out the bowl. Phil as we do every morning helps me with the dishes. I will wash and let him dry and put away the dishes. Today he's a lot slower than usual which is fine I help him finish drying and putting up our dishes but even in a day for only two people we don't make a huge mess.

"You still sleepy kitten?" I ask after we finish. Phil only responds with a nod and a little hum before escaping to the lounge.

If I wasn't overthinking before I definitely now. Phil's behavior is all off but he's trying to make everything seem fine. I haven't known Phil long enough to know why he'd be acting like this, he's just now staring to show more bits of his personality. I know I tell him he doesn't constantly have to verbally answer but this is oddly quiet for Phil.

I poke my head into the lounge and see Phil curled up in his corner on the couch. He looks exhausted but he's watching animal planet so he must not be too tired. "Hey Phil I'm gonna go check mail." Phil looks over and just nods. I will take it for what it is. To be fair to Phil it was a statement that could have gone unanswered.

I come back in with snow sticking to my slippers and soggy junk mail that could have gone another day without getting but I won't need to worry if I'm missing anything important now. I toe off my slippers and slide right into another pair, because yes I'm the guy that owns multiple pairs of slippers.

When I walk back in the lounge Phil is sleeping and now I know something is definitely not right. I place the mail on our coffee table before I go over to Phil. He's never fallen asleep outside his room he's had several close calls but he's never allowed himself to nap off. "Hey Philly you want to wake up?" I say softly but definitely still loud enough for a neko to pick up on. When he doesn't move I go to give him a head rub as it's the one spot I know I can pet him at and not have it seem like I'm sneaking up behind him. Phil slowly starts to wake up. "Come on muffin wake up. Woah your really warm." I place my hand on Phil's forehead and it's burning. It also gets me a hiss and three small scratch marks on my hand. "Ow hey claws." I say more out of shock than being hurt.

"Ah ah no mm sorry dad, mm sorry." I get a sleepy Phil trying to mumble some apologies before his eyes snap open realizing my hand is back on his forehead. He quickly shakes and his hair starts to puff up.

"Shhh shhh hey it's just me Dan. Ok. You just fell asleep in the lounge and you're right hot are you feeling ok?" I ask placing my hand back on his forehead a third time .

"I'm fine." Phil answers shaking my hand off again.

"So if I took your temperature it'd be normal for a neko?" I ask not really believing him. I remember reading that like cats nekos will try hiding that they are sick.

Phil huffs and while I want to celebrate his defiance this isn't exactly the best time for him to choose that 'I'm not doing what Dan wants today'. "You can but I've always had a high temperature for a neko."
