Ha Joon stood at the door to the cafeteria. He knew he had to go in. He had lost the bet after all. But beyond that he was hungry. If he didn't eat now, he wouldn't get another real meal until dinner. A loud grumble from his stomach decided for him. Eat now, and hope for the best. He stepped into the typical chaos of the cafeteria. The roar of his classmates sounding much like the roar of his green lion. Ha Joon shook that thought out of his head. He didn't have the time to think of such imaginations. Food first, avoiding Woo Jin second. He shuffled over to the serving line behind a row of his classmates. So far he hadn't spotted Woo Jin. Earlier Ha Joon had gotten lucky when feet from his desk Min Ji pulled Woo Jin away before he could say a word. Ha Joon would never say it to her face, but he sent a quiet thank you as she left tugging on Woo Jin's arm.
It wasn't that he didn't like Woo Jin. He seemed genuine in his actions. He was friendly with everyone, kind, not the smartest in the class but always trying his hardest, and no apparent hidden meaning behind the things he would say. But no matter how good Woo Jin's personality was, Ha Joon had long learned there is no getting close to the popular kids for someone like him. His place was somewhere three steps below where they existed. Best to get Woo Jin's attention off of him as fast as possible. He could only hope with being the new kid he was like a shiny new toy for Woo Jin that he would soon grow weary of playing with, and move on to the next new exciting distraction. Today though, he was still in Woo Jin's sights.
"Hey what took you so long?" Ha Joon wasn't even started as Woo Jin's voice came from behind him. He let go of the breath he'd been holding ever since he'd set foot into the cafeteria.
"Um, I, um." Ha Joon stumbled with any excuse.
"Hey don't worry about it. You're here now. Let's go find a seat."
Ha Joon turned with his full tray to look at Woo Jin standing behind him with his own tray in hand.
"Aren't we sitting with your friends?"
"I decided I wanted you to myself."
"What?"
"Kidding. I realized that you might be uncomfortable if you joined me with everyone at the table. You've been sitting on your own so far I think it would be too much for you right now. Come on let's go."
Ha Joon didn't move. His feet rooted themselves into place. One foot stuck from shock, one from fear. The shock from the fact that Woo Jin had taken his feelings into consideration for anything. No one had done that for him beyond his own family, and even that was limited. Fear from what that meant as repercussions from Woo Jin's friends. How could he, Ha Joon, who didn't rate anywhere on a popularity scale, get the most popular boy in school to sit with him only. This couldn't lead to anything good. His homework getting torn up, chalk dust in his desk, a hoard of zombies sent to his house, tripped in the hallway. Standard bullying procedure.
"Hey come on." Woo Jin called.
While still terrified and amazed Ha Joon found the strength to move. He couldn't stand there all lunch. He still needed to eat. Woo Jin lead them back away from the crowd to what he had made his regular table. A few other loner kids spread out among the nearby tables stared at them as they walked by. Woo Jin waved at every one of them. Every one of them smiled and waved back.
"You really are popular." Ha Joon mumbled under his breath.
"Hmm?" Woo Jin asked, leaning in too close.
Ha Joon pushed him away. "Nothing I was talking to myself."
"Oh." Ha Joon couldn't miss the tiny pout on Woo Jin's lips. He really doesn't hide his emotions at all.
"Come on already let's sit down. If you say hi to everybody our food will get cold."
"Ah right."
