Woo Jin rocked back and forth on his heels, his eyes focused forward on the teacher at the front of the gym. Around him the room was filled with the excited whispers of his classmates. The day of the football tournament had arrived. Beyond the competition between the classes, each class had to create two teams of their own. As the teacher made his announcements and went over the rules, Woo Jin slowly maneuvered himself to the back of the group where is class was standing. In the back corner by himself, Ha Joon fiddled with something in his hands. Woo Jin moved closer to see that it was a green colored pencil. There was no paper, only the pencil.
A loud cheer went up from around the gym. Woo Jin looked up but had missed what had brought about the excitement, his attention too focused on Ha Joon. The room settled back into a relatively quiet state as the teacher spread his hands out to hush the rowdy teenagers.
"All right classes, time to form your groups. If you haven't picked your team captains, well what are you waiting for." A small chuckle went through the room. "Team captains time to create your teams from your class. Good luck and have fun."
"Yeah, right, fun." Woo Jin heard Ha Joon mumble to himself. Woo Jin said nothing in response, only shuffled an inch closer.
From the front of the group two classmates moved forward. They played a quick game of rock, paper, scissors to see who would get to pick first. It was a game repeated throughout the gym as other team captains did the same for their class. With no more announcements the noise in the gym grew increasingly louder. Friends gossiping among friends, taunts being made to rival neighboring classes, general unruliness found in any large mass of students. Woo Jin moved closer to Ha Joon, blocking out some of the noise.
"Alright Class 3, listen up. I am first captain and Dae Jung is second captain."
"Wait Beom Seok why are you first captain?"
"Because I won. I get to pick first."
"Oh. Well, whatever. Go ahead and pick."
"Just give me a second." Beom Seok waved Dae Jung off. "First I'd like to say, thank you for making us your captains."
"Nobody else wanted the job." A voice called out from the group. A few chuckles swept through the group.
"Thanks anyway. Now if you could all line up here, it will make it easier for us to pick."
A few people groaned but did as ordered. The clumped mess of class 3 became a clumped line of class 3.
"Okay great. Hey new kid. What was his name again?"
"Ha Joon." A voice offered.
"Right, Ha Joon. Come on up here, we're picking teams."
In one coordinated move the class turned, their eyes all focused on Ha Joon who remained rooted in his spot.
"Come on Ha Joon, we have to start picking teams."
Woo Jin could see the beads of sweat pop up on Ha Joon's forehead. His eyes grew a fraction of an inch. Woo Jin could nearly smell the panic pouring from Ha Joon's body.
"What about me?" Woo Jin called out. All eyes turned to him. "Don't you want me in line too?"
"Oh right, Woo Jin. Sure. Get in line." Beom Seok's voice remained low and unamused.
Woo Jin turned to Ha Joon. "Hey, follow me. I'll get in line if you get in line." He slipped his hand against Ha Joon's arm. He couldn't help but notice as Ha Joon flinched away from his touch. It was a small movement but enough to pull him just out of reach. Woo Jin dropped his hands. It was not the first time Ha Joon reacted that way to his touch. "Come on it won't be that bad."
