Woo Jin stuffed his English book deep into his bag. He never wanted to see it again. Not accidentally, not on purpose, not at all. He knew English, and yet for some reason, nothing in his current assignment made any sense. It was as if everything he had learned in the last four years was gone.
School had finished hours ago, and only half the class remained for the self-study part of the day. A few had left right at the end of school, but most had been leaving slowing one by one as the night wore on. Including Ha Joon who had left half an hour earlier. As much as Woo Jin wanted to follow, he had to work on his studies before his heart. But as he had been staring at his English homework for nearly an hour and getting nowhere, he had to admit defeat.
With his bag packed, Woo Jin slipped out of class to head home to try again. Maybe a new environment would give him a clearer mind and restore his lost English. Part way down the stairs overlooking the athletic fields Woo Jin noticed a familiar back sitting hunched along the bleachers. A back he had seen before sitting alone in the cafeteria, ignoring everyone around him. Much as he was doing now. Woo Jin altered his route. His eyes were so focused on his target, his feet missed the first stair. He tripped with a loud crash against the metal frame. His target jumped in surprise, hiding a small notebook and pencil behind his back.
"Are you following me?" Ha Joon grabbed his bag, stuffing the notebook and pencil inside. He jumped to his feet and took two steps back.
Once back upright Woo Jin held his hands in front of him. "No, not at all. I was just on my way home, and I saw you here. I didn't mean to scare you."
"I'm not scared of you."
Woo Jin smiled. While he could literally see the fear pouring off Ha Joon, it made him happy to hear him say it aloud.
"And I wouldn't want you to be scared of me. I am sorry that I startled you." Woo Jin climbed the few stairs to reach the same row as Ha Joon. "What were you doing?"
"Don't want to talk about it."
"Okay." Woo Jin moved closer taking his bag off his shoulder. When still a few feet away he turned and sat down. After a few moments Ha Joon sat back down as well.
"What are you doing?" Woo Jin asked.
"Didn't I say I didn't want to talk about it." Ha Joon grumbled.
"I didn't ask what you were doing, I asked what are you doing. Like what are you doing now?"
"Talking to you."
"Argh. No I mean what are you doing? Why are you still here instead of going home?"
"Don't want to talk about that."
"Okay. Is there anything we can talk about?" Woo Jin stared out onto the fields though he kept a side eye on Ha Joon. In the distance classmates were playing football. From their distance Woo Jin couldn't recognize anyone on the field. He only knew they were classmates from their uniforms. It was a simple game of a few players running up and down a half field. Their laughter and shouts carried on the wind up the bleachers. Nothing that could be understood beyond guys having a good time,
"When you say there is no bullying at this school, do you mean it?" Ha Joon suddenly asked in a hushed voice.
Woo Jin looked away from the game to stare directly at Ha Joon.
"Is there no bullying at this school? Honestly, I cannot say for sure."
"I knew it." Ha Joon turned away.
"But," Woo Jin raised his voice, "I and others like me do our best to keep it down. We listen when others tell us they are having a hard time. Many of us have seen the consequences of what happens when there isn't someone to listen."
