Mom and I made it back home about ten minutes later. Coming inside, we set ourselves up in the living room on the couch. I dished out the pizza onto plates while mom grabbed us each a can of coca-cola and turned on the TV. Some movie I'd never heard of was on and I can't say I was really able to follow what it was about either. About halfway through the film, mom and I began to talk instead of watch anyway.
"So, how's the job at the video store? Do you like it?" I started off.
Mom gave a cheerful 'mhm' as she swallowed a bite of pizza before replying.
"It's good! But I can't really complain when all I do is rent out movies to people all day. My boss; Max, is a very nice man, though he only comes in for night shifts, so I hardly see him. The customers are usually really kind too."
She thought some more about it and suddenly, her eyes popped open like she'd just remembered something.
"Oh, and I work with one of our new neighbors; Lucy Emerson! She joined just a couple days ago. You remember we saw her moving in the other day with her two sons Michael and Sam?"I nodded to her.
"Yeah, I remember. I've actually already met Sam; the younger one. He's come into the comic shop a few times and I've talked to him."Mom grew a wide smile.
"Really? What's he like? From what I've gathered from Lucy, they seem like they're a very nice family!"I thought about my answer before shrugging.
"He's cool - really nice to me anyways. I don't know how much Alan and Edgar like him though, because he was kind of flirting with me a little..."Mom's eyebrows raised as she took a sip of her coke.
"And were you flirting back?""No! I mean, we exchanged numbers, but I meant it as a friend thing! Alan did get a bit jealous though." I explained, beginning to feel the guilt hit me.
A smug grin appeared on my mom's face. Her eyes flickered once to my neck and back again.
"Him getting jealous just shows that he cares, honey. But, I can understand his reasoning now for doing that to your neck last night. Marking his territory so that Sam doesn't get any ideas."I covered my face with my hand, my cheeks turning bright pink.
"Oh god. Please don't say weird stuff like that, mom!"She put up her hands defensively, letting out a chuckle.
"What? It's extremely attractive when a guy gets all alpha! Even you can't deny that!"I slapped another piece of pizza onto my plate and allowed myself to smile a bit as memories of the night before flooded back into my mind. My voice was a mumble when I spoke next.
"Yeah...it was definitely hot last night..."Mom gave me a look like she'd known exactly what I'd said and gave my arm a nudge. Snickering, she crossed her legs on the couch and took another bite of her pizza. But after gulping it down, she glanced at me curiously.
"Speaking of Alan, have you two made things official yet?" She wondered.I nodded, a smile creeping its way onto my face.
"Yeah, yesterday evening we did. And then we started kissing and Edgar made gagging noises at us."Mom raised an eyebrow.
"Is Edgar bothered by you dating his brother?"I shook my head once.
"No, he just hates all the mushy crap and makes fun of us for it. Since him and Alan have always been known for being hardasses."Mom laughed out loud.
"Trying to keep a manly reputation?""Exactly!" I giggled. Thinking about this now reminded me of earlier in the shop with the two little boys. I started to grin wider.
"Oh, I have to tell you! Alan did the most adorable thing today for these two kids!-"
