Edgar, Sam, Katie and I made it safely back outside. We had just come out of the cave's entrance and were running back down the walkway to the stairs. Some of us faster than others.

Sam had run far ahead of the rest of us, taking the stairs two at a time on the way up while he yelled to his brother.
    "MIKE, START THE CAR!!"

Meanwhile, back on the walkway by the water, Edgar ran behind Katie and I, but he caught up to us quickly due to Katie slowing down. The sun was affecting her, making her tired and weak. She stumbled and nearly fell into me, but I reached out my arms and balanced her before she did. I knew she wasn't going to be able to make it up the stairs in this condition, so I made the quick decision to carry her. Picking her up bridal style, I hurried up the steps. She wrapped her arms around my neck and buried her face into it, shielding herself from the sun.

At the top of the stairs, Edgar was waving at me to hurry up. When I reached him, we scrambled down the second staircase together.

"We blew it, man, we lost it!" I exclaimed to him.

    "Shut up!" He shot back.

"We unraveled in the face of the enemy!" I reminded him frantically, watching where I stepped on the stairs.

"It's not our fault! They pulled a mind scramble on us; they opened their eyes and talked!!" My brother justified.

We got to the bottom of the stairs then and ran over to the car. Sam had just placed Michael in the back seat next to the two vampires he'd taken from the cave. There was the girl Edgar and I had almost staked and a little boy who couldn't be any older than seven. They were all passed out from the sun, just like Katie.

Sam looked over at Edgar and I.
    "I'll drive."

My brother and I stopped in our tracks next to the car. I stared at the two unfamiliar bodies in the backseat.
    "We don't ride with vampires!"

Sam scrunched his nose at us, getting into the driver's side of the car.
    "Fine, stay here."

Edgar and I pondered this for a moment, glancing around the area and then at each other. He spoke what we were both thinking.
    "We do now."

    "Yeah." I quickly agreed.

Both of us ran around to the other side of the car and got in the front with Sam. Edgar was in the middle and I was on the end holding Katie in my lap.

"Come on, Sam, let's get out of here!" My brother remarked. Once we were all in, he turned to the blonde.
    "Burn rubber!"

Listening to him, Sam started the car and slammed his foot down on the pedal. However, the car was in the wrong gear and we began racing backwards instead of forwards...right towards the edge of the cliff. The three of us screamed as the end of the car just barely stopped right before going over the ledge.

"Christ!!" Edgar shouted, glancing from the cliff back to Sam.

He crinkled his eyebrows at the both of us, shifting the car's gear.
"Burn rubber does not mean warp speed!!"

And with that we sped off away from the cliff back towards town. None of us talked on the way there, but just caught our breath and let our heart rates slow down from all of the excitement. At one point during the ride the sun was beating down particularly hard on us. Katie shifted in my arms, trying to hide herself from it. I looked down at her and squeezed her tighter against me, hoping that we'd be inside soon.

Eventually, we made it back to Sam's house. He parked the car back in the garage and tried waking up Michael again. Since we were out of the sun now, it was a bit easier to get him up, but he still took moving very slowly. When he saw that we were back at their house, he turned and picked up the girl from the backseat. He saw that I was carrying Katie and turned to my brother, gesturing for him to grab the little boy. Edgar hesitated but ended up doing it anyway.
