*********************Hayden's POV*********************
It's been a little over a month since the accident. Since we rescued Emmet. She hasn't moved since then, and has shown no signs of waking up. But, she's alive. At least she's alive. I run my fingers gently through her hair as I watch her breathing, the only sign that I know she's still alive. That she will still come back to me. Her body has been healed for a week now. She should be awake. I just can't figure out why she's not. No one can.
"Come on love. You need to wake up. We've been missing you, more than anything. I need to hear your laugh again. Hear you yell at me, anything. I need to see your smile, those beautiful eyes. I can't live without you here. I know I tell you this every day, but I can't do it alone. I love you so much. I just need you to come back to me so I can prove that to you every single day." I nuzzle my face gently into the crook of her neck, breathing in her scent.
"I'm sorry Hayden. I don't know what else to do. I wish I did, I wish I could do more. I'm beat. I have no idea why she hasn't woken up yet. I've tried every spell I know, even ones that were banned years ago. It's almost like she's keeping herself there," Lizzie says with an apologetic look. I nod slightly, giving her a sad smile. She pats my shoulder gently before walking out of the room. A tear slips out of my eye as I pull Emmet into my chest. My wolf is whining deep within my mind, begging his mate to wake up and come back to us. I wish I could help her, help them. I would take her place in a heartbeat if I could. I just don't know what I can do.
*********************Emmet's POV*********************
I groan out in annoyance as I roll over in the soft grass. This is seriously getting old. I've tried everything I can think of. My body is healed, but I'm still stuck here. Smokey growls lowly at me as she paces back and forth. She's pretty mad to say the least.
Wake up already you useless human. I want my mate. She hisses in annoyance before throwing herself to the ground. I swear she's actually a moody teenager.
"Gee, what a wonderful idea. Why didn't I think of that one," I state sarcastically. She hisses at me again before adding a low growl. My eyes automatically roll in annoyance before turning away from her. "I want Hayden just as much as you want Kade. I've been trying to wake up. Nothing works."
Well do something else. I roll my eyes again.
"What do you want me to do? Dress in drag and do the hula," I ask sarcastically quoting The Lion King.
Clever. Smokey rolls her eyes in response, which I honestly didn't know was possible for a cat to do. But there you go. Proved me wrong there. I lay back down on the ground with a huff of annoyance. The grass rustles as soft footsteps make their way towards us. I jump up from the ground quickly, spinning on my heel to face the person who is in my subconscious. I can definitely say there shouldn't be anyone else in here with me. My eyes quickly lock on the figure standing in front of me and I freeze.
"Mom," I choke out, my voice strained with emotion. She smiles softly, the warm smile that I've missed so much over these years, and nods. I'm in her arms in a hug before I even register what happened. Goddess I've missed her hugs, I've missed her.
"Hey sweetheart. How have you guys been?" Tears rim my eyes as I breathe in her scent.
"We've been good. Ren and I found our mates Mom. Hayden is amazing." Her warm smile wraps around me, filling me with the motherly warmth that I have missed so much.
"That's wonderful sweetie. I'm so happy for you, both of you. Unfortunately, I can't stay much longer. They allowed me to come and let you in on a secret, on why you're can't go home. It's you. You haven't let go yet, but once you do, you will be able to return to your mate. As for mates, I have to get back to mine. Your dad sends his love. He would be so proud of you if he could see you now. Goodbye Emmet. I love you," she says sadly as she grips onto my hand before disappearing into thin air.
That was... weird. Let go? What in the world does she mean by that? Let go of what?
"Not what, who." I spin on my heel, searching for the delicate voice. My eyes meet with dark brown eyes of a beautiful girl. Her dark brown hair flows in soft waves down her back. Her ethereal white dress flows softly in the breeze, contrasting greatly with her deeply tanned skin. My brows furrow in confusion as my eyes remain trained on her. I have no idea who she is. I've never seen this girl before and she's suddenly chilling in my mind.
"Who are you?"
"I'm a prisoner of your mind." My brows shoot up, and probably off my face, as I stare at her in confusion. Uh-huh, well.
"What does that even mean?"
"It means that you have to let me go. You have to free me before you can be freed as well." A soft smile rests upon her lips but sadness lingers in her eyes.
"I have to free you?"
"Yes. Release me so I can go back."
"Back to where?"
"My love," she whispers softly.
"How do I do that?" Her melodious laughter fills the meadow as she takes a step back.
"That is for you to figure out Emmet. I'm sure you'll find a way." Her gentle footsteps slowly back away from me, edging closer to the treeline. Well, here goes nothing. My eyes slip closed as I take a deep breath, relaxing my muscles in the process. Let go. That should be easy. Not a problem. I scour my mind, searching every inch I can find for a mystery prisoner that I've been keeping trapped apparently. Then suddenly, I feel it. A presence that I have never noticed before, and it feels trapped.
Well, I'm not sure why she is there, but she is. My brows furrow in concentration as I imagine bars, pulling on them with all my strength to open the cage. The gentle breeze picks up, turning into a fast wind as it floats my hair around me. The imagined cage snaps open with a bright flash in my mind before my eyes snap open. The girl is standing in front of me, tears filling her eyes with a bright smile on her face.
"Thank you. Thank you so much," she sobs in happiness.
"Wait. Who are you?"
"I am Evangelic's wolf." My breath catches in my throat at her words. A tall man appears beside her, pulling her into his chest in a loving embrace. This must be her love, her mate. He dark brown hair falls across his shoulders as he rests his head on hers. He black eyes meet mine, a smile taking over his features as he embraces his mate.
"He says thank you, Emmet. We both thank you, and we both forgive you," the girl's voice floats through my mind once again. Evangelic's wolf. Tears well up in my eyes as they disappear into the air. My body crashes to the ground, the soft grass doing very little to cushion the fall in the process. Oh my gods.
*********************Hayden's POV*************************
A quite rustling in the room stirs me from my sleep. My body tenses as my eyes shoot open. I instinctively lean over Emmet, prepared to shield her from any harm as I scan the area.
"You didn't think you could get rid of me that easily, did you?" My eyes widen at the voice as I turn to face the speaker.
