Although Jake and Erin's story is purely fiction, the events and the emotions depicted in their story is based on true events. You see this book is very personal for me. In times of hardship and sorrow something beautiful will come out of the situation.
Sometimes in life we make decisions not only for ourselves but for people that we love. We make decisions that impacts not only our loved ones but us and our future. We don't know it yet but when our loved one passes and we are not left with any regret of 'maybe I should have done this'. The spur of the moment decision becomes the best decision we ever made in our life.
At the end of the day, we cannot take with us all the material things we have in this world all we can take with us is love —-the love in our hearts from family, love from our partners, from friends, children, and spouses.
This is for Olive, the strongest person I'll ever know. Who like Jake, was steadfast in her love and unwavering devotion to the person she loves.
And to Oscar, though your fight might be short, shorter than Erin in this book, you fought valiantly to the end. I could not be any prouder.
