The hands of the analog clock moved slowly, as if they were not moving at all. It read 2:53, and the thought of seeing him in seven minutes made my heart beat faster with excitement and anxiety. I was currently sitting in 12th grade history class, along with twenty-one other bored to death students. Usually history class interested me, but today I was too distracted by the thought of going to the Fall Dance with Derek. Everyone in the school seemed somewhat excited to attend, and all my friends had been waiting for this event since school started. It was hard not to watch the clock all class with all the excitement in the air.
Finally, after what seemed like ages, the bell rang for dismissal. I made my way from the crowded doorway and throughout the busy corrider, and finally reached my locker. My small fingers were moving the cold metal of the combination lock, my mind focused on the numbers to the password, when all of a sudden someone wrapped their strong arms around my waist in a hug, making me jump a little.
"How's my beautiful girl?" Derek asked in my ear, kissing my cheek lightly after. I could feel my cheeks starting to redden - public displays of affection made me embarassed.
I smiled and turned around, and his lips collided with mine before I had the chance to answer. He was known for doing this; cutting me off before I had the chance to say something important.
"Just fine, I guess," I replied with a sigh after we broke apart, his hands still on my small hips.
"Just fine? Aren't you as excited as I am to go to the dance tonight with such a wonderful person?" he asked, biting his lip worriedly. I knew he would react this way and sometimes I couldn't help but play around. It was what I did.
"I'm kidding Derek, I am so excited to go with you to the dance," I said with a grin, my eyes rolling at his distress. I laughed and shut my locker, and his deep brown eyes met mine.
"Don't mess around with me like that September. You know how I feel about being toyed with," he said straightly with anger lingering in his voice. He was serious; his eyebrows were furrowed together and his mouth was in a pout.
"Okay babe, I won't do it. But really, you need to relax some. Take a joke sometime, it makes life better," I said taking his hand and walking down the now empty hallway. It bothered me that I couldn't always joke around like I wanted when I was with Derek, but now wasn't the time to discuss it.
"I'll pick you up tonight September," he told me as we reached the entrance door and walked out into the crisp autumn air. The sun shined brightly in my face as he pulled me in for a tight hug, the large forest ahead of me doing nothing to block the burning light. He kissed my lips lightly and we both went our opposite ways home.
