The strobe lights in the gym where the dance was being held burned my eyes even from the ticket booth where we were standing. Derek was having a conversation with one of his buddies, and I was quietly listening in.
"So, is the great Derek Sanders going to do the deed tonight?" his friend James asked loudly. I flinched at the thought of doing it with Derek - I certainly wasn't ready for sex and I was still a virgin. I meant to tell him how I felt about it before, but we almost crashed when I got the nerve to speak up.
"Well I hope to," Derek whispered loudly, thinking I wasn't listening when I could still here him clearly. "Did you see her man? She is smokin' tonight. I might not be able not to," he proudly said, shaking Derek's hand and coming back to red-cheeked me.
"Everything all right babe?" he asked me, obviously noticing my distress from their conversation, but I blew it off anyways.
"Just way too excited to be here with you," I said with a smile, offering my hand to him. He took it and we walked into the large, dark gym together.

The tempature went up instantly when we walked into the gym. All around us were sweaty teenagers, and people were grinding on each other, twerking and doing every other dance you could ever think of.
From a distance I could see Perry, in her strapless silver dress we picked out together, dancing and talking with the rest of my friends - Gwen, Trish and Nikki, and they were with three very attractive guys. She noticed me looking and waved for me to come over.
"I'm going to talk to my friends," I told Derek happily before I left.
"Sure. See you soon," he replied, looking down at the ground. I suppose I could understand his showing pain - it was our night - but it was my friends night also.
I walked to the four of them and the three men they were with earlier left.
"Who are they?" I curiously asked them.
"Well, those are mine, Trish's and Perry's dates," Gwen told me. I noticed instantly that there were four girls and three guys, and knew that Nikki was here alone. I turned my back to the others, who were already busy dancing once again, and spoke to Nikki who was standing off to the side some.
"How's it going Nik?" I asked kindly. I was the only one to use the nickname, and she was definitely my closest friend, even if she was the supposed oddball of the group. She understood and cared more about other's problems.
"It has been better," she replied, a tone of sadness in her voice. She messed with her straightened dyed-blue hair, and bit her chapped lips nervously. She looked different than the rest of the people here, in her red dress with a defined collar, while others wore strapless party dresses showing off every part of their legs. She was a very shy but kind girl, and although others would judge her for being different, I envied her for pulling it off so well.
"I know what you are thinking," she said quietly, turning her face to me completely. "You are wondering why I'm here alone."
"I'm not thinking that Nik."
"Doesn't matter. I will tell you anyway," she sighed. "A guy asked me to this dance a week ago, and I agreed to go with him, but he stood me up," her voice quietly explained.
"Well Nik, that is his loss," I told her, taking her hand and leading her into the dance floor. We danced together for a couple minutes when a skater looking guy walked up to us.
"Nikki? Wow, you look so amazing," he said to her, basking in her beauty.
"Daniel, why did you stand me up?" she said flatly, standing taller. I was surprised at her direct tone, and was glad that she was going to stand up for herself.
"My mother's car broke down on the way here. I am really sorry Nikki. Can I please have this dance?" he said sincerely as Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls began to play.
Nikki looked at me, her eyes begging for a solution, and I nodded my head slightly to let her know that he was sincere. She smiled widely and took his hand and began to dance slowly with him, there bodies as close as could be.
I stood for a moment there, thinking about how happy I was for Nikki, when Derek came, wrapping his arms around my waist like always, and kissing my exposed neck lightly.
"Isn't young love beautiful," he said half mockingly at my obvious joy over Nikki and Daniel, and I playfully punched his arm as I pulled away.
"So either our love isn't beautiful or we are old," I sarcastically replied with a grin, happy with my come back. He grabbed me by the waist, pulled me in, and we danced along to the end of the song. At the end of the song, he whispered in my ear and asked if I wanted to get some air.
"Sure, this room is getting really stuffy," I told him as he took my hand and led me out to the balcony on the next floor.
