Derek had left straight after, telling me that he was going to get something to drink.
"I'll see you back down there," he said before he walked down the flight of stairs. I sat in the top of the staircase, my clothes finally back to normal, but my mind and heart broken. Tears rolled down my face as I sat there crying, wondering what I did to deserve what just happened to me. Didn't he love me? If he did, why did he hurt me?
I was certainly not going to go back into that dance, especially after what had just happened between us. What he had just done to me.
I slowly got up from where I was sitting, and brushed down my wrinkled dress. As I clumsily made my way down the stairs, I noticed someone sitting at the bottom. Had he heard what had just happened? I looked at him wide eyed and afraid, hoping he wouldn't notice my red face from wiping the tears away.
His green eyes looked at me, obviously worried by my recent state. "Are you okay?" he asked me sincerely. I shook my head no, not feeling the need to lie to him.
"I just really need to get out of here," I told him as I stumbled through the doorway leading in the stairway, the tears coming into my eyes blurring my vision. Just as I was about to collapse, he grabbed my hands and pulled me up before I could fall. The feel of a human touch caused me to pull away with fear, and at that moment I was sure he knew what had happened.
"Let me drive you home," he said kindly. At first I was reluctant to get into a vehicle with a stranger, but then remembered that it was him or Derek, so I agreed and we walked out the back door to not be seen by Derek.
We reached his black Mustang, and he opened the door kindly for me, shutting it when I got in. He got into the driver's seat, and handed me a box of Kleenex. We started to drive away from the school, and I finally felt somewhat safe once again.
When my eyes were clear, I looked over to get a real view of who had rescued me. When I noticed his black hair which covered his neck completely, and the bang over his eye, I knew that I was sitting in a car with Xavier Gray. He chewed his pierced lip, and looked at me with his piercing green eyes. The smell of alcohol and smoke lingered throughout the car.
"Do you want to go somewhere quiet?" he asked me gently. I braced the door handle, the question reminding me of what Derek had said before he raped me, but nodded my head anyways. He pulled into a closed convenience store parking lot, and shut off the engine, but keeping the lights and music on.
"Aren't you September Williams?" he asked me as I nervously chewed my lip. I nodded my head slightly, feeling afraid to speak for my voice would probably crack.
"What happened to you? Do you want to tell me?"
"I'm not ready to tell anyone," I quietly said with a slight smile. I was grateful for his kindness, but I wasn't ready to talk about what had happened with Derek. How someone I trusted betrayed me.
"Well, whenever you want to talk I'm here," he said with a smile, reaching to turn the car back on. We sped out of the parking lot, and after a few minutes, made it to my house, Pierce the Veil playing in the background. I thanked him for taking me home, and quietly walked into my house, hoping not to wake my mother, which gladly worked.
