Lis tugged on my wrist forcing me to follow her down to the thin metal pole wedged into the ground leading across to the other side of the creek.
She had her eyes set on the pool and spa on the other side I knew it but I was staring at the pole wondering just how sturdy it was and how well it had been put into the ground.
"You worry too much Tori" Lis said noticing the frown on my lips. "I honestly don't understand how you could be considered a badass back home if you can't even cross a pole that's only about 7 metres off the ground" she said quietly.
She was right. You couldn't be a daring badass that got into trouble, and went out partying 24/7 if you worried so much. So how the hell did I do that every other day of my life??
I faked it.
Smiling I took Lis's shoes as she handed them to me and watched her step onto the pole.
It was pretty sturdy near the edge where it disappeared into the ground I was standing on but as Lis made it further across the creek I could see the metal pole swaying. Lis kept her hands extended out to keep her balance and crossed the pole easily doing a cartwheel off the other side.
I chucked her shoes across the creek at her as Darrel shoved past me and started the walk along the pole.
He wobbled in the middle more than Lis had but managed to make it to the other side kissing Lis on the lips.
I looked back at Ambrose.
"Ladies first" he smiled and I opened and closed my mouth like a goldfish.
"Ladies first is just another way of saying 'let me look at your ass while you walk in front if me'" I scoffed "so, you go first" I smirked innocently and stepped aside for Ambrose to walk across the pole.
Darrel and Lis begun teasing and shouting at Ambrose so that he laughed and the pole wobbled dangerously when he reached the middle but Ambrose made it safely to the other side with ease.
I looked at the creek below the pole and the long thick brown and green reeds that protruded from deep in the creek water. If I fell, I was more likely to fall into the weeds and not get wet because they were so thick and would make a perfect bedding but I had no intentions of falling.
I triple-checked to make sure my iPod was in my pocket and gripped my phone tightly in my hands as I took the first step. Right in the middle of the pole, the reeds were at their highest and they leant on the pole. If I wasn't careful I'd stand on one and slip. It was wobbliest in the middle too making it hard to keep my footing but like the others, I made it across safely.
"Can we do it again?" I asked Lis not really caring what the boys thought.
"Yes!" She squealed.
We dropped her shoes and our electronic devices in a pile next to the fence away from the creek and hurried back down to the pole.
After 7 or 8 more walks across the beam we were back on the other side of the creek and getting bored.
Ambrose and Darrel were siting on the grass by Lis's shoes and the spa was looking more and more inviting.
"This is the last one" I called to them as I stepped onto the beam.
When I made it to the other side I turned to wait for Lis. She was already 3/4's of the way across and I considered grabbing my iPod and recording her. But I didn't.
Lis was half way now and she had reached the reeds leaning on the middle of the pole.
She stepped over the first reed and almost slipped on the next, the pole wobbling wildly. She stumbled and attempted to keep her balance leaning too far forward as the pole jerked to the left. She rose on to tip-toes unable to stay flat footed and tried to keep walking and make it across but she had no balance at all.
She stumbled again and I gasped as she dipped forward and tried to grab onto the pole twisting and falling off.
"Lis!" Darrel shouted as she disappeared out of sight in the reeds.
I couldn't help it. I laughed.
"Ayalisse" I half-laughed, half-cried.
"Ahh Tori, I think I have a problem" she called.
I could distinctly hear her moving around and I guessed she had landed on the reeds and they had in fact made a sort of bed that kept her dry but as I carefully made my way across the pole toward her I realised she had yet to touch the ground.
The pole we had been balancing across for the last half hour ran the length of the creek and a smaller pole -about as thick as your middle finger- followed directly underneath it.
Lis was holding that pole tightly, knuckle white. I bent down slowly and wrapped my legs around the bigger pole as I sat beside her, laying on my stomach.
When I was sure I could hold both our weight I extended my hand and she gladly took it wrapping it tightly around my wrist.
I pulled her so far until her hand reach out and snatched at my shoulder. She clung to my shirt and I moved my hand so that she could take it with her other hand that still had yet to let go of the tiny pole.
"I got you" I said quietly as Lis rolled her eyes playfully but I could see she really appreciated what I was doing right now.
I pulled Lis up again so that I was almost slipping down the other side of the pole and she wrapped her legs gratefully around the pole like me.
I wasn't going to try to stand and Lis looked like she had no intentions to do so either so we crawled along the pole until we reached the other end.
Darrel rushed up to Lis and pulled her to her feet.
"Don't ever scare me like that again" he breathed pulling her into a hug.
"Darrel's got a point Lis, almost gave me a heart attack" I muttered but I know she heard me.
Ambrose helped me to my feet and wrapped his arms tightly around my waist. He kissed my cheek but didn't say a word.
"Thanks Tori" Lis said coming to stand before me.
Ambrose let me go and I jumped on Lis making her stumble backwards. I hugged her tightly and wished that I would never have to let her go again.
"Well I wasn't just going to let you hang there and die" I joked.
Lis laughed and I giggled beside her.
"Shall we go to the spa now?" Darrel and Ambrose whined.
I let go of Lis and we turned, linking arms and grabbing our boyfriends hands, dragging them behind us to the spa.
