Chapter 12 Tori

Lis was an orphan. She looked so hopeless right now, like she didn't know what to do.

She sat down, stood up, sat down, stood up and paced and then did it all over again while I stared at her, still waiting for the information to sink in.

"Would you sit the Fuck down! You're driving me crazy"

"Sorry" Lis said quickly and dropped to her knees, shifting so that she was cross-legged in front of me.

"Thank you" I sighed and was met by silence. "So your an Orphan with shit loads of money that you can't use for another two year"

Lis shrugged and almost moved to stand again but I paced my hand on her knee.

"Don't" was all I said and she settled again.

"So your okay with this?" Lis said.

"What do you mean?" I asked confused "of course I'm okay with this, I would've liked to know sooner but.... It's cool, your private life" I smiled and Lis returned it happily.

"Well then we should go to bed" Lis stood and helped me up.

"I still have to call Ambrose" I said quietly.

"I thought you were going to do that while I was in the shower?" Lis asked this as a question wondering if I had actually said that or wether she was dreaming.

"No, I was going to but my phone's flat" I rubbed the back of my neck.

"You could've used mine" Lis punched my shoulder lightly and I mentally slapped myself yet again.

"It should be charged now, let me check" I held and finger up in a gesture for her to stay where she was and literally dived onto my bed, bouncing over to the bedside table and picking up my phone .

"See? Charged" I held the phone up and disconnected the cord dialling Ambrose's number. I climbed off the bed and put it on speaker coming to stand beside Lis in the middle of the room.

He picked up on the third ring.

"Tori thank God!" Ambrose almost shouted into the phone and I looked at Lis with worry.

"Ambrose, what's up?" I asked uncertain.

"There's been a murder" he stated and I rolled my eyes at Lis.

"We know"

"You do?" He sounded surprised.

"It's at our school Ambrose, of course we do" I rolled my eyes again.

"Nobody will tell us anything about the murder though but we heard about where it was and we thought..." Ambrose trailed off and I realised why he was so worried.

"You thought it might've been us" I said quietly.

After a moment of silence Ambrose spoke again: "Yeah. I've been trying to call, but neither of you were picking up"

Lis looked at me confused and hurried over to her phone, checking it. "It's on silent" she stated slapping her forehead.

"My phone was flat, it just finished charging" I said.

"So you girls are okay?" I heard Darrel ask and I noticed we were on speaker.

If Lis hadn't spoken neither would Darrel or vice versa.

"We're fine babe" She said quickly and we exchanged glances.

I felt really bad knowing that Darrel didn't know one of the biggest secrets of Lis's but it all added up.

The way she freaked when I asked questions about home, and they was she locked herself in the bathroom when Darrel got nosy. It all added up.

Ambrose was speaking but I hadn't been listening

"What?" I asked.

"I said" Ambrose talked slowly like I was a two year old who didn't understand English "they're putting our school in a sort of lock down state. No one leaves the building or they will be arrested" He said.

"Yeah, we can't leave here either, I doubt we'd be arrested but we'd probably get detention" I sort of smiled and Lis glared at me.

Apparently not the time to joke, I sent her a sorry glance and she softened up.

"We won't be able to see each other for God only knows how long" Darrel was speaking now.

"Spring break is in a month" I said matter-of-factly.

"We have to catch up" Lis added and I grimaced.

"Sounds great" Darrel answered and then it was Ambrose's turn to speak again.

"Night babe, sweet dreams" he said quietly.

"Night" I replied "Be safe"

"You girls be careful. Until we know who this sick bastard is, don't ever leave each other alone" Ambrose sounded scared for once. He showed no emotion, it was hard enough to break through his walls for him to stay with me. "If something happened to you..." He trailed off and I smiled sympathetically.

"Lis isn't leaving my sight" I said quietly.

"And Tori isn't leaving mine" Lis added taking my hand.

I squeezed her hand tightly with my own and she returned it with a comforting smile.

"You two be safe, don't do anything stupid" I spoke quickly.

"We won't" they said in sink.

"Night babe" Darrel said and Lis answer with her good night's.

"Night" I said hanging up.

As soon as the call was cut off Lis looked at me and crossed her arms across her chest.

"What?" I asked.

"What was that face when we mentioned Spring break?" She almost shouted.

"I told you, I don't know if I'm going back to see my family" I said quickly.

"Why is that such a hard fucking decision!" She shouted throwing her hands out in a gesture of confusion.

"Because it's complicated, okay" I spoke quietly having not raised my voice yet.

"How is it complicating?" Lis lowered her voice "it's family or a whole month with Ambrose"

"It's... Lis, you have to understand. This is one of those private things that I don't talk about... Ever" I said holding my hands out in front if me slightly.

Lis looked pissed, hostile and I didn't want her getting angrier.

"I never talk about my past, how I'm an orphan and I did it!" She shouts.

"Well maybe I'm not ready to say anything, you made a choice to tell me that and now your pressuring me to tell you this" I shouted now, I couldn't keep my voice controlled anymore.

"Well obviously you don't trust me" Lis said and I stared at her in shock.

"Of course I trust you" I said.

"Then why is it so hard to tell me!" She was shouting again.

"Because I'm not ready to talk about it!" I matched her voice getting angrier by the second. Tears sprung to the corners of my eyes but I blinked them back, this is so stupid.

If I stayed here any longer I would hurt Lis and I couldn't live with myself if I did that.

"Where are you going?" She asked as I walked to the door.

I picked up my bike keys for the table by the door and pulled on my shoes opening the door and walking out without saying a word.

Lis shouted my name but she didn't move to follow me out the door. She knew in her heart, that I needed to be alone and she let me.
