Chapter 34 Tori
We got to the beach eventually considering Lis had to give me this major pep talk to even get me in the car.
She left me with Ambrose and took Darrel out to the really big waves at the back. I leant on the bonnet of the car while Ambrose unhooked his board from the roof and watched Lis and Darrel.
They seemed to be having fun what with Lis and Darrel smiling so much, I could see their teeth from here.
Lis flipped her board at the top of the wave and fell off.
I gasped slapping my hands over my mouth and jumping off the bonnet looking out at the water.
Ambrose was laughing at my reaction, board in hand. He stood beside me now watching Lis and Darrel.
"How can you laugh?" I asked confused still searching the water for any signs of Lis.
"She's fine" Ambrose waved it off taking my hand in his and leading me down to the water.
Lis popped up and waved at Darrel jumping back on her board and watching for the next good wave.
We reached the edge where the sand met the water and I stopped pulling my hand out of Ambrose's and stepping back as the tiny white froth touched my feet.
Ambrose stopped and looked at me "What's up?" He asked.
"Nothing" I lied through my teeth noticing that Lis was up in another wave with Darrel following just behind her.
"Your kidding" Ambrose said snapping my attention back to him. "You're afraid of water?"
"Is it that obvious?" I asked and Ambrose raised his eyebrows.
"Fuck" I whispered.
"Did you actually think you could come along today and pretend you weren't petrified?" Ambrose asked a small smirk on his face.
"Something like that" I shrugged.
"So how can I convince you to come in with me?" Ambrose asked jamming his board into the ground and leaning on it.
The water was up to his ankles until the waves came and then it was up to his shins.
He was less than two metres away from the shoreline and I was on the shoreline. The sticky wet sand stuck to my toes and the water ran over them lightly. Each time the water touched my toes I shivered and it took all my will-power not to step back but forward.
"Be patient" I said closing my eyes and taking another step.
The water moved around me feet and I could feel the sand slipping through my toes. Tiny jolts of pain went up my feet like when you walked over rocks and I told myself it was only tiny shells like the cockle my Grandpa and I used to collect.
Six steps later and I was holding Ambrose's hand again standing up to my knees in water.
"Your shaking" he stated and I glared at him punching his chest lightly.
"Shut up" I said and he smirked. "I don't understand how you find this amusing" I pointed out.
"Oh but it is" Ambrose said winking, "you should see your face" causing me to blush furiously.
People were beginning to show up in their wet suits with their surf boards and I watched Ambrose stare at them longingly as they ran into the water and mounted their boards.
Sucking in a sharp breath I looked at him and forced the biggest smile possible.
"Go" I said pushing Ambrose further out.
