Staring

I made my way through the corridors, the memory of what just happened playing over and over in my head. How could such a perfect day, be ruined so fast. How could someone so wonderful, have so many things happen to them? These questions filled my thoughts, but didn't distract me from where I was going. The medical ward. A place which was filled with dirty beds, that were made up with dirty sheets. The full grey walls had old blood stains from accidents, and other stains which had been a school mystery since the dawn of time. There were very few windows and so little light entered the room, which was probably a good thing else one would have to see the filth that surrounded them.
Nothing could distract me. I kept thinking about how I would have to tell everyone what happened, when I don't even know myself. I only know what state he was in when he was taken away. I looked down into my hands and saw Klaus' glasses, smashed and broken. I had picked them up and cradled then when the crowd had dispersed. Tears rolled down my cheeks again Violets voice echoed through the hall.

"Isadora, did you find..."

She stopped in front of me. Staring at the glasses in my hands. Her face fell and she looked into my teary eyes.

"Isadora, what's happened?" She asked, calmly, but it was clear to me that she was panicking.

"Violet, I...I don't know. I found him on the floor in the corridor, he was bleeding badly. He's in the medical ward" I said, my hands beginning to shake. Violet took my hands in hers and said,

"Listen, Isadora, don't worry about Klaus. He is really brave, he will get better, and he'll be with us when we move into our home. Don't ever doubt that he loves you. He will always do anything to protect you. We will ALL get through this" She consisted by throwing her arms around my neck and pulling me into a comforting hug.

After we had told the news to Sunny, Duncan and Quigley, we all made our way to the medical ward. Violet was holding Quigley's hand and Duncan was carrying Sunny, who was resting her head on his shoulder. I carried Klaus' spare glasses, the ones he keeps in his bedside drawer. I couldn't cry. Not when Klaus needed me.
We entered the medical ward in silence, listening to the constant coughs and cry's of the sick. The lady at the front desk pointed us in the direction of Klaus' bed, and when we reached it, we all sat down, remaining in silence.
Klaus was pale. Really pale. He was still and there were large black bruises around his eyes and larger ones on his chest. He had cuts on his arms and a gash on his forehead. I placed his glasses, the broken ones and the spare ones on the scratched bedside table, where there was also a jug of discoloured water. I stared. Violet stared. Sunny, who was sat on Violet's lap, stared. Duncan stared and Quigley stared. I don't think anyone knew what to say. I certainly didn't.
I don't know how long we sat there, but it didn't seem like long before a nurse came over and told us that visiting hour was over,

"I can allow one of you to stay overnight, but the rest of you have to go, I'm sorry, you can come back in the morning" she said, giving us a sympathetic smile. For someone so kind, she was stuck in somewhere so horrible. It made me miserable thinking about her in this grim place. She left and a quiet conversation began between the five of us.

"Violet, you should stay, you're his sister and he's a lot closer to you than he is to me" I said, wiping away my escaped tears "I can take Sunny and put her to bed if you want?"

"No, Isadora, just because I'm his sister, doesn't mean he would want me here. When we were on the run, he spoke about you every day, it got a bit tedious after a while, no offence. He really does love you. You stay, and if he wakes up, you can send for me. He would want YOU here, not me. I'll go, and put Sunny to bed."

"Violet, are you sure? He's your brother." Quigley began, before Violet cut him off

"I have never been more certain of anything" she said, picking a sleeping Sunny up in her arms and carrying her, as her and my brothers made their way back to the dormitory, and I was left alone.

The night dragged on, and my eyes became heavy. But I couldn't sleep. What if he woke up? Or something happened and I was asleep? I can't miss that. I sat there, humming my favourite song. My Mother always told me that I had a beautiful voice, but I never believed her, that never stopped me though, I sang when I was scared. In the car on the night of the fire, as we were driving away from our home, I sang. In the orphan shack, I sang, in the red herring, I sang. But like I said, I'm not that good.

"You could shed a thousand tears
Or be alone for three hundred years
Because..."

"The world is quiet here"

I looked up and saw Klaus, awake and smiling at me. I got up, suddenly more awake than I have ever been and threw my arms around him.

"Ouch Isadora!"

"Sorry" I said, kissing him on the cheek "how do you know that song?"

"My mother used to sing it to me, before I went to sleep"

"So did mine" a smile spread across my face, and my happiness couldn't be contained anymore. "Klaus, what happened?" I ask

"Umm...well...I was going for a walk, I was going to ask the ladies in the cafeteria for some treats, to celebrate our plans coming together. And on my way there, I got stopped bu some guy, I don't know who it was, but they told me to stay away from you, and that a filthy book lover like me didn't deserve someone like you. When I said that you meant too much to me, he did this" he finished, gesturing to his face and bruised chest.

I don't know what to say. That was stupid, why would someone do that? We sat and talked until dawn, and Violet, Sunny, Duncan and Quigley turned the corner and, with smiling faces, joined the conversation.
