T H I R T Y F I V E

Today wasn't going to be the repetitive schedule you had gotten used to and that excited you more than anything. While you did enjoy your time with Connor, you were very happy to return to your job. Connor watched as you happily slipped on your shoes after getting ready.
"Are you sure about this, Y/n? If you're still not feeling well--"

"I'm fine, seriously this time. I'm...great." You smiled and sighed in relief

The android nodded and him and Hank headed outside with you. The both of them sat in the front, Connor offered to share the backseat with you but you ensured him you'd be fine. You had to go back to being independent again, for yourself and others; considering you still felt like a bit of a bother still staying with Hank and Connor. You knew they didn't mind but it was a feeling you couldn't shake. You felt your heart as it was beating out your chest as you recognized the exact route to the station. You guys grew closer and closer and you grew more anxious, but you were glad that you were in a good mental state again. Hank parked and looked back at you; turning the car off.
"Y/n...if you ever feel like it's too much please take a break, I'll even take you home if ya want."

"I know, and I'm sure you will. I have to do this, though."

He happily sighed and nodded,
"I know you do."

Connor's face was full of worry but you reminded him that everything was okay and that you'd just do paperwork today. You leaned up to kiss his cheek.

"I think you guys should keep each other a secret, just for a bit...I'm not really sure how this would fly over with the department." Hank suggested

you nodded,
"Yeah, you're right."

"Well, let's do this." the older man opened his door and hopped out and you and Connor did the same. You followed him into the building and were quickly greeted by most of your colleagues yelling out "Welcome Back". You barely even recognized alot of the faces but you were happy to be greeted back, you thanked everyone before being guided into the break room where there were a few ballons strung up and a handmade 'Welcome Back' banner. Then the cake was brought out that said the same text along with your name written out in frosting. You thanked everyone before turning to Connor once everyone was beginning to cut the cake,
"Did Captain Fowler plan this?" you were genuinely confused

"No, but he signed off on it and helped." the android slightly smirked

"Wait, no way! You planned this?!" you scoffed and playfully shoved his shoulder

"Well it was Hank's plan, I just executed it with him." he smiled

"You guys are so sneaky!" You laughed before a slice of cake was shoved towards you, you looked up to see who it was coming from and smiled at Gavin.

"I made sure you at least got the 'Welcome' bit." he grinned

You looked down at the frosting and laughed,
"Gavin...that says 'Welc'..."

He looked at the piece again,
"Shit... I...well.. I didn't cut it!"

You laughed and took the slice along with the plastic fork he gave you,
"That's so ironic that your last name is Reed, but you're illiterate." you joked, earning a slight laugh from Connor and Hank

"Oh, haha," he sarcastically joined, "It's not my fault!" he couldn't hide the smile that was on his face

"I still appreciate it." you smiled and slid a piece of cake with frosting onto the fork before happily placing the delicious dessert into your mouth. You were a bit surprised it tasted so well. You and a couple of co-workers talked amongst yourselves before they returned to their jobs. You did the same once you finished your cake. You grabbed some coffee before returning to your desk. You began the paper work and for once you didn't dread it as much, being back in this atmosphere was great. You couldn't help but look up when you felt like you were being watched, you looked around to see Connor's staring at you. His LED was blinking, you furrowed your eyebrows and mouthed a question to him. Asking whether or not he was scanning you. He mouthed a 'maybe' and you smiled. You looked around again before waving him over. He got up from his desk and quickly came to yours,you looked up at him and quietly laughed,
"You're not allowed to scan me without my permission. I'm fine Connor, you don't have to do that. If you really wanna know how I'm doing, just ask."

"My apologies, Y/n. I'm just...worried," his LED spun yellow for a quick second, "What if I have to scan when it's an emergency and you can't give me permission at the time?"

You thought about it before nodding,
"You got me there. Fine, only if you ask or if it's an emergency, okay?" you smiled

A small grin appeared on his lips and he nodded. His LED blinked again and he look over to Hank who he waved to come with him,
"We'll see you at lunch. Call me if you need anything." he urged

"Oh...right. Yeah, of course." you watched the two men leave before letting a slight frown spread across your face. You sighed quietly, you felt alone now. That was something you hadn't felt in quite a bit with Connor at your side at every waking moment, you felt your eyes sting and tears welt up in them. You fought them to stay back before you heard someone plop something down on the empty desk connected to yours. You looked up to see Gavin, he had just sat down a cardboard box onto the desk. You quickly wiped your eyes and looked up at him in confusion,
"Wh-what are yo--?"

"This seat isn't taken is it?" he grinned at you

"No...?"

"Cool." he began to empty the box that seemed full of his belongings.

"Are you moving there?"

"Yeah, I hope you don't mind."

You weakly smiled and shook your head. He put the box down, deciding he'd finish later, "D'ya need a hand with that?" he pointed at the stack of work on your desk

You nodded,
"Yeah, it'd be great if you could sort them for me." You demonstrated in what order you wanted the pile seperated in. Once he understood he took half of the stack and began doing as you instructed. You smiled to yourself as you realized that you weren't as alone as you thought. You both talked and laughed with eachother as you worked. When time came Gavin actually joined you all for lunch and it went surprisingly well. Him and Hank had actually got along with each other as they shared jokes with eachother. He and Connor had their awkward moments but you could certainly tell he was trying to understand the android. Everything went better than you expected from your first day back.
