"I swear that I was heading down a darker road, you got through my guard when I was in safety mode..."
It wasn't easy for Kaycee at first, she hadn't had a good experience with partnering before. She started too soon and too young, she had never been comfortable with the hold thing of being in someone else hands. To be honest, she had never been comfortable with being touched in general.
With her former partner, towards the end, they had so many fights because she wasn't on the same page as the other girls. She wouldn't wear lots of makeup or tight clothes or do flirty and sexy routines — she wasn't a prude or anything she just didn't feel the desire to be or do things like that.
She was so used to have him around that when he threatened to end their partnership she felt scared and promised to try. Then for months she omitted herself and did things she didn't really want — she didn't hate the girl she was pretending to be, she just knew it wasn't her.
And not being able to be herself added to the fact that she hated to be touched and lifted and tossed around by someone she didn't really trust, just made her end everything. After that was done she told herself that she would never go there again.
But then there was Sean Lew with his sharp movements, soft-touch, cute dimples, and forest smell. She knew who he was, everyone knew who he was and everyone also knew he didn't like partnerships — that was one of the reasons she was okay to dance with him that day when Will asked her. She knew it wouldn't be a risk to go there.
So she danced with him and the girl, that was a mistake because she loved it. She loved how she felt beside him and loved the fire in his eyes. Dancing with partners had never felt like that before, it was as if his moves belonged to hers and vice-versa.
When the song was "it's your turn now, it's your turn now" and they made eye contact it was like catching on fire but being safe still, and when he was watching her freestyle she felt like the whole room wasn't there anymore. So when the song ended she ran from him and form whatever it was that she felt there.
But since she's Kaycee and things never go as planned for her, they spent the day together and girl, that was another mistake. Because when they danced, yeah it was something special but he was still 'The Sean Lew', he was still unapproachable and didn't belong in her world. But then he was buying her ice cream, making her laugh and blush, talking about clouds and how much he loves his dog, listening to her without making fun of her weird laugh and being soft.
So when he asked if they could dance again she said yes, and that was mistake number three.
At first, it didn't really happen but then they were put to dance together again, and again and again and the teachers seemed to have liked the duo. And the internet started to like and ask for them so it started to happen more and more until the line between partners and two dancers who just dance together sometimes started to get blurred. When there's a Sean there was a Kaycee and vice-versa.
And they started to spend more and more time together to the point their group of friends became friends too, their sisters followed each other on Instagram, Sean would go out to play basketball with her brother and their moms would go shopping together.
The closeness part didn't really bother her because soon they became best friends and she loved how much he paid attention to her and to have him around. Everyone would go around rumoring that they were more than friends or that she wasn't good enough to be dancing with him in between other things but Kaycee didn't really care for those, she was what you would call an 'unbothered queen'.
But then she started to hear that one word over and over and over again: partners. And that was when she started to freak out.
She didn't even know what she was doing at first, it was almost as if her unconscious was leading the way but day by day she started to push him away. She didn't want to stop being friends with him but she didn't want to be a partner again, so for people to stop thinking they were partners she started to avoid being around him.
