18 YEARS LATER

Y/N

"You don't have to hang around here if you want to go and hang out with your father y/d/n."

Your daughter, now eighteen looks up at you from behind the reception desk of your veterinary practice where she worked part-time as a receptionist and you watch with amusement as her eyes light up like you'd just given her the best news in the whole world.

"Are you sure mum?" she asks.

You nod, "I only have to see one more patient today and I am perfectly capable of closing up y/d/n. Go have some fun with your dad."

y/d/n literally leaps up from the chair and grabs their backpack, "thanks mum, you're the best."

You roll your eyes, "y/d/n you worked hard in school an finished with top grades, you've volunteered here since you were fifteen, and help your father with his photography and towel business. We couldn't ask for a better child."

y/d/n walks around the reception desk and hugs you, "love you, mum. And I promise I will decide soon what I want to do with my life."

You watch with pride as your daughter walks out of the practice, feeling a stray tear run down your cheek because it felt like only yesterday you were bringing her home from the hospital and now she was a young adult ready to make her own life decisions.

GLICK

I was just getting ready to jump in the helicopter when I see y/d/n running across the field towards me. I was happy that she loved photography as much as I did, and I was happy to have her help me out from time to time with shoots because sometimes she ended up with better shots than me.

"I thought you were working at the practice?" I ask, slightly confused but happy none the less.

y/d/n comes to a stop in front of me, "mum let me off early so here I am ready to take some kickass photos, better than my old man."

I gasp, "remember who taught you how to use that camera young lady."

y/d/n laughs and pushes past me to climb into the helicopter.

~Time Skip~

We were flying over Bondi Beach when I notice y/d/n staring down at the water. As much as she loved photography and helping out at the veterinary practice, y/d/n was a natural in the water, swimming and surfing from a young age competitively and throughout high school winning numerous awards and titles.

"You know what I'm going to ask you y/d/n don't you?" I say, putting my camera down.

y/d/n sighs loudly, "you're going to ask me what I want to do now I've finished school, and trust me I already told mum I was on it, dad."

I decide to leave the topic at that, knowing if y/d/n had something planned she would surely tell myself or y/n. We never wanted to be parents who pushed our child into a job or life they didn't want, telling y/d/n from a young age she could do and be whatever she wanted and y/n and I would support her along the way.

1 WEEK LATER

CHAPPO

Somehow I'd pulled the short straw and along with Maxi and Deano had ended up doing the lifeguard trials for open applicants who were applying to the service for the first time. The lifeguard service relied on fresh blood and new talent coming through, and each year only one or even two at a push made it on as a trainee because the original lifeguards never seemed to want to retire.

"Alright, can I have the next group come over, tell me your name and you'll be assigned a lane and a lifeguard who will time you," I call out, staring down at the clipboard in front of me thankful this was the last group.

"You need to smile more Uncle Chappo, I don't like seeing you frown," y/d/n voice sounds directly in front of me.

I look up in stunned silence at my niece stood in front of me wearing her trademark grin she inherited from her mum. I quickly shake myself out of the silence and tap the pen on the clipboard, "what are you doing here y/d/n?"

She motions around her, "I'm here to try out silly, I've decided I want to be a lifeguard now I've finished school."

"Do your parents know?"

She shakes her head, "it's a surprise. I love the water, and I love helping people so this is a win-win situation, Uncle Chappo. I know mum and dad will be happy that I've made my mind up."

I nod along with her, proud that she'd decided to try out. I couldn't not let her parents know that she was here, they wouldn't believe me otherwise.

"You can have Maxi, good luck."

She smiles and walks off towards Maxi, greeting him with a hug because she practically grew up around the lifeguards. I take out my phone and message Glick and y/n telling them to come down to the trials as soon as they could because I had a surprise for them.

Y/N

You walk into the swimming pool where the lifeguard trials were taking place bumping into your husband Glick who looked equally confused why Chappo had called you both down here.

"Do you know why he messaged us?" You ask.

Glick shakes his head, "no idea, but I guess we better head in and find out what."

The two of you walk into the main pool where trials were still taking place and Chappo waves you over.

"What's the emergency?" Glick questions.

Chappo grins and thrusts a clipboard at Glick, "have a look at the last name on the list."

Glick scans the list and you see his eyes widen, "are you being serious? Is this some sort of joke?"

You snatch the clipboard from your shocked husband's hand and stare wide-eyed at your daughter's name on the bottom line.

"Damn she beat your swimming time Glick, maybe you should retire and let y/d/n take your spot," you joke, handing the clipboard back to Chappo.

Your husband pushes you playfully, "haha very funny y/n."

"I think she's hilarious," Chappo chimes in, taking your side as he always did.

"Do you think y/d/n will make it onto the service?" You ask, genuinely anxious for your little girl.

Chappo nods, "I think Deano told Hoppo and since everyone loves y/d/n and she's been a lifeguard in training for the past eighteen years gives her a very good shot at grabbing a position with o without the trial because we all know she's perfectly capable."

"Mum, dad, what are you doing here?" y/d/n surprised voice comes from behind you.

Both you and Glick turn around to see your daughter drying her hair with a towel.

You clear your throat, "Uncle Chappo called us, I'm so proud of you y/d/n. You're going to be an amazing lifeguard."

y/d/n lets out the breath she'd been holding, "I thought you'd be mad that I followed down dads career."

You shake your head, "I'm thrilled for you y/d/n. We didn't force you into making this decision, you decided all on your own and that's all your father and I ever wanted for you. Now give your dad a hug before he dies of a heart attack or something."

y/d/n giggles and walks past you to hug Glick, who hugs her back tightly trying to fight back the tears of how proud he was in this moment. sure you were a little bummed she didn't become a vet, but she would be helping people every day and making a difference in her own unique way.
