Yael wouldn't stop pacing. Becky couldn't blame her, she would be doing the same thing if it was Alyssa in surgery. Rather than snap at her friend, she went to go get them both a cup of herbal tea. It would be an hour or so before they could expect to see the surgeon. A quick jaunt down the hallway took her to the coffee cart she spotted when they first came inside. She had them brew two cups of tea and took them back to the waiting area.
"Here." Becky stepped in front of Yael as she went to turn. "Drink this."
"Broon, the last thing I need is more coffee. I have more than enough energy to spare." Yael muttered as she hesitantly took the cup.
"Yael." Becky scoffed, pretending to be hurt. "I wouldn't bring you coffee. Its tea."
Yael offers her a small smile.
"Thanks cap." She takes a sip then cradles the cup in her hands. "Time is passing so slowly."
"It always does when someone you love is in surgery. Nothing you do will make it go faster. You just wait it out. Then you get the good news, and everything seems back up to normal speed."
"Right." Yael sipped her tea as she went back to pacing.
Becky took up her seat, tucking her legs underneath herself as she set her tea on the side table and picked up her book. That was all they could do. Wait and pray.
The hour seemed to stretch over several. Yael cradled the to-go cup in her hands long after it was empty. Her tread the familiar path on the tile between the sides of the waiting room. Becky had finished her book. It rested on her lap while her eyes stared blankly at the patterns of the pictures on the far wall. Both women snapped their attention when they heard footsteps. But it wasn't the doctor.
"Val? What are you doing here? Nicole didn't say you were coming!" Becky bounded up from her chair and hugged the breathless woman.
"Hey Becky." Valerie Barnhart's voice is warm once she catches her breath. "Nicole didn't want any of us to come out. She kept saying that it wasn't that big of a deal and how we didn't need to bother trying to get all the way out here. Mom and dad don't like to fly much anymore, so I volunteered to come out."
"I should have known." Becky laughed as the two women separated.
"It's good to see you Val." Yael said after attempting to swallow her nerves.
"You too, Yael." Val enveloped the brunette woman in a warm hug. In her ear, she whispered. "Nicole told me that you have been taking good care of her. Thank you. It is about time she found someone. She hasn't told mom and dad yet, so don't worry." She felt the woman relax further. They hugged a moment longer, then separated.
"So. How much longer is she in surgery?" Val questioned as put her bags on an empty chair.
"We should be hearing something soon." Nicole replied after glancing at her watch. "We actually thought you were the doctor."
"Well hopefully they will be out any moment then." Val said. She offered them both comforting smiles.
It was only after Becky and Valerie got Yael to sit down for a moment that the doctor came out. He smiled at the three women, reassuring them as he drew nearer. They stood in unison as he approached.
