My eyelids feel heavy when I try to pry them open. The little layers of crust you get on your eyes every time you sleep, seem to have glued them shut. I squeeze them tighter over and over in hopes to moisten them so they'd open. After a few tries I feel a few tears begin to surface, easing my eyelids open so I can finally see where the heck I am.It takes a few seconds of blinking and focusing to get rid of the fuzzy haze, but when the world around me is crystal clear, I wish I would've just kept my eyes shut.
Looking down at my left arm, I see a needle in the crease of my elbow connected to a machine a few feet away. A clear plastic tube is wrapped under my nose and tucked behind my ears, aiding me in breathing. The longer I look at the room, my breathing picks up and the quicker the lines move on one of the machines.
I refuse to believe it but I can't hide the reality forever.
I'm in the hospital.
Within seconds I can feel the beating of my heart against my chest and my body goes numb from head to toe. With hardly any lights turned on and the lack of noise, it feels like hell.
My sudden awareness catches the attention of nurses near by. Snapping my head to the right, I see figures in white and blue scrubs hustling to put on gloves, grab extra pens, and snatching charts left and right.
"She's awake!"
"Bring her some fluids."
My eyes fix on them. Waiting to see who would be the first one through the door. Who would be the first one I'd repent. Impatiently, my legs shuffle underneath the thin white blanket and my hands clench around the sheets.
First one through the door is a short blonde girl with a tan clip board and a pen in her hands. On top of her head sits a messy bun with hair sticking out all over the place, and her glasses sit low on the bridge of her nose. Before speaking, she takes a quick glance at the papers, adjusts her glasses, and gives me a warm smile.
"Hello Ms.Kim. I'm nurse May, and will be taking care of you for now." She reaches out to shake my hand but I draw back. Glueing my hand to my hip underneath the blanket.
I can see the pity in her eyes when she notices my skittishness, and she checks the monitors, and I'm guessing she's writing down my vitals. As her eyes look between me, the monitors, and the papers, she clicks her tongue and bites her lip.
"Ms.Kim do you...remember what happened this evening?" The nurse asks, keeping her head down, looking over her glasses.
I avert my eyes and try to rack my brain for the answer she desires, but the harder I try, the more my head hurts. I reach up to rub my forehead, but I'm surprised when my fingertips are met with a rough fabric. My hand lingers on the cloth for a brief moment before letting it slowly fall back down onto my leg.
But I can't remember. The recent hours that have passed are all grey.
"I-I'm sorry miss, but I-I don't know." My eyes tilt up, looking at the young girl with a face that looks like I just lost my best friend.
My nurse open her mouth to spill what I can only imagine to be bad news. But when a loud ruckus comes from the lobby of the nurses' office, both of our attentions are quickly drawn.
"Sir you can't be back here-" I see people getting up from their seats behind the desk and making their way towards the commotion.
The dark green curtains in my room cover the windows on either side of my door, limiting my sight of the outside. While I strain to see, the nurse rushes to the entrance of my room, placing both of her hands on the frame.
"Sir, I said, you cannot be back here!" A heavy set nurse yells.
"Let me see her. I said I need to see her!" A familiar voice calls, but I can't recognize it for all of the yelling in the background.
"She needs rest and isn't ready to have visitors yet." The doctors and nurses persist.
Minutes pass and the noise in the lobby slowly thins back to low whispers and conversations. Avoiding the topic of what happened earlier this evening, my nurse asks if I would like something from the hospitals cafeteria.
"I think I'm just going to sleep for right now. Thank you though." I whisper, fidgeting with my fingers. I just need some time to calm down. My heart is still beating a million miles and hour, and breathing isn't becoming any easier. No matter how long it's been, hospitals will never be the same.
The sweet nurse bows and quietly takes her leave with the clipboard in her hand.
