anne wakes up on monday to the delightful news that school is cancelled. although she's upset to miss school, she's thankful she won't have to see ruby- it was painful to on saturday, when she met up with her friends in the shack and ruby cried for two hours straight over, the one and only, gilbert blythe. once ruby had left, though, anne immediately told her two closest friends of her regrets.

anne sticks her head out her window and smiles at the sight of a frozen branch reaching towards her window from the apple tree standing in front of her bedroom. she leans further and stretches her hand out to touch it, delicately, as to make sure it doesn't break off. she hums in delight as the icy branch melts off to the touch of her hand, water running down the sides of her fingers and hand seconds later. she smiles, watching the water drip down her hand and off the branch to the ground underneath avonlea's winter sun, finally uncovered by the clouds.

"anne?" a voice calls from beneath her. she looks down to find jerry frowning up at her. "what on earth are you doing?" she drops her arms.

"i'm touching the ice on the branches," she explains. jerry raises an eyebrow but shrugs it off and enters the cuthbert's home. it's anne, of course. what else had he expect?

anne sticks her head back in to her bedroom door and closes it, immediately being hugged by the warmth of green gables. as she smiles from the comfort, her phone vibrates on her bed stand. she shuffles towards it and checks the text.

from unknown number:
anne shirley-cuthbert?

she frowns at the unfamiliar number.

from anne:
who is this?

from unknown number:
oh, sorry. it's gilbert blythe.

she sighs in relief, a smile slowly spreading across her freckled face.

from anne:
hello gilbert. do you need something?

from gilbert:
i was wondering if you would like to go out on a date with me today.

from anne:
really?

from gilbert:
yes, really. meet me in charlottetown by 3.

she smiles down at her frown. the butterflies in her stomach are back. 'my first date is with gilbert blythe!' she thinks gleefully. 'but what will i wear?'

anne shirley wonders over to her wardrobe and pulls it open, looking at the shirts, dresses, and jumpsuits she owns. after a few minutes of going through clothes, she settles on a long sleeved yellow shirt that read "save the bees!" with a large picture of a bumble bee on it, dark blue jeans, and sneakers. she quickly brushes her hair and looks at her reflection in the mirror, shrugs, and hurries to the bathroom.

once she's done washing her face and brushing her teeth, she hops down the staircase. marilla was sitting at the dining table at jerry, eating taste and strawberry jam. "moth- marilla, can i go to charlottetown around four, today?" she asks, nearly calling marilla her mother. "i want- well, need some new books."

"depends. will you be alone?"

"no, i'm- uh, diana will be joining me," she lies.

a smile casts on jerry's face. "can i come?"

"no, jerry, you cannot." she exclaims quickly as she glares at him. she quickly adds, "it's-it's girls day."

jerry narrows his eyes in suspicion, something gnawing at his brain.

"sure," marilla replies to the firecracker. "don't spend too much money on books." anne smiles sheepishly. she always tends to waste a costly amount on her beloved stories.

anne skips towards the woman and embraces her in a hug. "that you so much marilla," she says with genuine gratitude." she rushes to marilla's purse and takes out a small dosage of cash. she then skips back into the dining room and kisses both marilla and jerry goodbye before leaving, and gets set to take the train to charlottetown.

gilbert's sitting at a table in charlottetown's most popular café, a cup of iced tea in his hand and another one waiting for anne. he looks down at his phone and checks the time- it's almost four now. he smiles.

anne approaches the café and peeks through the window, finding gilbert looking down at his phone whilst sipping his choice of drink from a cup. she exhales, her heart racing with nerves, and contemplates turning around and running back to the train station. 'no,' she tells herself. 'i've already come all this way. that wouldn't be fair to me, or gilbert.' she inhales deeply before pushing the door open.

the bell above the café's door rings, catching blythe's attention. he looks up and smiles at the sight of anne shirley-cuthbert walking towards him, nervously playing with her fingers. she gives him a small yet friendly smile, her cheeks turning a bright red.

she stops in front of the table. "hi," she says softly. he smiles.

"hi." hesitantly, she pulls the tables chair back and sits down, scooting towards the table once seated. she clears her throat. "i got you some tea. i thought it was too bleak for a cold drink, i hope you like it."

her awkward smile morphs into a wide, appreciative one. "i do. thank you, gilbert. that's so sweet."

he smirks and looks down at his cup. he looks back up, examining anne's appearance. the bright yellow shirt compliments her pale skin. her hair is down and slightly curly from spending so much time up in braids. he likes when her hair is down. meanwhile, gilbert is simply wearing a long sleeved, gray shirt and dark blue pants. he tried his best to style his hair this morning, but found that trying to tame his curly hair is more difficult than he had expected.

"you look beautiful," he blurts out, causing his and her cheeks to turn bright red. anne smiles and mumbles a thank you, looking down at her cup of tea. she brings it up to her lips and take a slow sip, and is happy when she recognizes the flavor as green tea. oh, how she loves green tea. gilbert clears his throat, "i just thought we should talk about what happened on friday, at the dance."

anne nods solemnly. "i don't want to hurt ruby," she explains. "and being with you, that would break her heart. i'd lose her."

"she doesn't have to know," says gilbert. "we can keep it a secret from her- and others. anne, i love you. i want to be with you, and i know you feel the same way. don't let ruby gillis stop you from being happy."

anne searches the boys face for an emotion. his eyebrows are furrowed in passion, cheeks still red from blushing. he's nervously tapping on the sides of his cup with his fingers.

anne looks down. "i do want to be with you, gilbert..." he smiles softly.

gilbert reaches across the table for anne's hand and intertwines their fingers. she looks up at him again, and he looks her in the eyes. "anne shirley, will you give me the honor of being able to call you my girlfriend?"

anne can't help but to smile.
