Daniel POV
I thanked the gods we weren't awkward. Again.
Not that it was actually possible for me and Ash to be awkward. We had been friends our entire lives, literally. Our moms used to joke that we had been friends since before we'd been born, as supposedly they put their pregnant bellies against each other once and we both kicked, like a pre-birth high five. There was not a single thing in the world that could happen and make us feel awkward with each other, apart from double amnesia.
But I still thanked the gods on every step on the way. That it wasn't awkward when we broke that kiss, or when we drove off and were suddenly alone, when I started speaking, when we got home and were not alone anymore, or when we reached our room.
Cause even if it was a crazy and funny plan that could actually work, if there was the slightest chance it could ruin things between Ash and me, then it was out. Ash was the priority.
Though we didn't say anything, we were waiting for Seth as we changed clothes and joked about our little stunt. Seth was taking his sweet time, but he was coming by bus.
"Poor Seth, he has to deal with all this shock and curiosity alone, on the bus. We should've given him a ride."
"No. I'm sorry, but we couldn't, and you know why. We had such a perfect getaway, we couldn't ruin it."
When Seth finally arrived, he was loud. We were upstairs and still flinched from the bang of the door closing.
"Ashton! Daniel!" he yelled, probably louder than he ever had in his life. "Come out now! You need to explain! What the fuck was that?"
We smiled at each other as we made our way down. Sarah was there, berateing Seth for yelling and swearing, but the poor boy was so shocked he barely seemed to notice.
"Go throw something else on, we're going for a drive," I told him.
"Boys, is everything okay?" Sarah asked, her eyes shifting between the three of us.
"Yeah," Ash said, while Seth disagreed.
"No, the two of them went crazy. Like 'I'm sorry, mom, but we have to call the loony' crazy."
He seemed serious, but from his tone she could tell we weren't fighting. "That's nice, honey," she said dismissevely. "Have fun!"
"You coming?" Ash asked as we headed for the door. Home wasn't the best place to talk, what with Sarah and the nosy twins.
Seth just threw his bag on the couch and came with us. We didn't go far, opting for the closest Starbucks. Couldn't really go farther, as Seth was gonna chew his nails off soon.
We had barely gotten our drinks and sat down when he started. "You're not gay." It wasn't a question.
"Yeah, we noticed."
"Then what the fuck was that?"
I shrugged, turning to Ash. I had understood his plan with his first words, but it was still his plan and he should do the honors.
"Well, what you said about Neil Patrick Harris was kinda right. You said it, and we figured it out as well, during lunch - if there were some gays that were popular and they like, they'd get over their shit and stop this bigoted fuckery. But there aren't. So I figured me and Dan could take one for the team, you know." He smirked. "The one you're playing for, you know."
Seth leaned back, thumbing the rim of his cup. "I understand where you're coming from, but there are still plenty of questions."
"Yeah, we should really talk this through. We got the idea right there in the parking lot so we haven't really thought of everything yet."
