Daniel POV
Ashton and I had two classes together - gym before lunch and english, last of the day. I wished I had some with Seth as well. Weird kid. I know Ash wanted to get along with him, to bestow some meaning to Sarah saving our asses, maybe some meaning to our moms being gone as well. I didn't believe his fate mumbo jumbo. Our moms didn't meet because we were all meant to be friends, we were friends cause our moms met. But that didn't mean I didn't want to get along with Seth. It was mostly... pity. I know, it sounds bad, but the poor kid looked so depressed and scared. He could use a friend or two, and if we were gonna live in the same house as well, why not.
First was math. I walked to the back of the class, and most eyes followed me, making me stop in my tracks.
"What is it? Oh, do you guys have a seating plan or something?" I asked no one in particular.
"No worries, lolly, sit where you want. How about here?" a girl drawled, patting a seat next to her. She was hot too. I wasn't a slut like Ash, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate beauty.
"Lolly?" I asked.
"You know. Like lollipop. Sweet."
"This is a rather direct way of saying you wanna suck on me, darling." She blushed, though I was pretty sure that's exactly what she meant. "Daniel Morris."
"Rebecca Strong," she smiled. Before she could continue, other kids within earshot started to introduce themselves as well. Others came closer, sitting on desks to chat or even forcing people to switch seats. Now you'd like to hear that I stood up for the underdog, but honestly I couldn't care less.
"You play some sport, Daniel?" a hot blond on my right asked.
"Dan. Yeah, basketball. Anyone knows when the tryouts are?"
"Ross might," she said, pointing to a tall guy. He must have been 6'5 at least.
"Yeah, Ross looks like he might. Hey Ross, do you know when the basketball tryouts are?"
The teacher came ten minutes later. By then I had a dozen new friends on Snap and I'd been invited to a party. And most importantly, I found out the tryouts are today.
Every high school is the same. It has a rigid social structure, and I knew I'm on the top. I didn't care. I used to, a lot, but losing stuff changes things. Now I was just being me, making shallow connections, keeping an eye out for Seth. The people of this school were eating it up and I didn't mind either. I didn't wanna be the cliche guy who becomes a loner after losing his mom.
Gym was the first class I had with Ash. By then I knew half the guys in my class and they were picking brownie points, working hard to introduce the other half. The ones they think are 'worth it' anyway. Ross was gushing over Ashton when I walked in, eager to introduce and impress.
"Hey Dan, there you are! This is Ashton White. Ash, Daniel Morris. You both coming to tryouts today. Ah, new blood!"
Now, we could just tell them we know each other. But if I missed this chance to mess with others, Ash was gonna push me off the bed at night.
"What, you play basketball? You any good?" I asked, stepping closer in an aggressive way. Ash matched my attitude.
"Better than you, you freaking gorilla."
"Can you even reach the hoop, shorty?" He may be just an inch shorter, but he's still shorter.
"Can you? Can you even get that mass of yours off the floor?"
"So you're short and scrawny. Congrats! Come back when you grow one muscle."
"I've got better abs than you."
