Achulophobia - origin: achulo is a Greek word meaning to darken.

Definition: achulophobia is (to any degree) the fear of the dark. It is a common fear or phobia among children and adults.

Achulophobia is the uncontrollable fear of the dark. It can either be rational or irrational. This could also -in some ways- tie in with trauma, which isn't always the case but it could be a factor.

There are a couple different names for this fear such as

- scotophobia: Scoto (Greek: Darkness or blindness) fear of the dark, or dark places. Commonly caused by traumatic experiences.

- lygophobia: Lygo (Greek: shadow, shadowy, shade, darkness, twilight or gloomy) fear of being in dark places -not as serious as nyctophobia-

- nyctophobia: Nycto (Greek: Night) the abnormal fear of night or darkness

Now, some Expert information on achulophobia and nyctophobia!

From healthline.com ()

Nyctophobia may be associated with a sleep disorder, like . A small on college students with insomnia uncovered that nearly half of the students had a fear of the dark. The researchers measured the students' responses to noises in both light and darkness. Those who had the most trouble sleeping were more easily startled by noise in the dark. Not only that, but the good sleepers actually became used to the noises with time. The students with insomnia grew more and more anxious and anticipatory.

Make an appointment to see a doctor if you or your child:

-have trouble sleeping

-feel particularly anxious or distressed in the dark

-have another reason to believe you may have nyctophobia

Diagnosis involves meeting with your doctor and answering questions about your symptoms.

Whether it be anything from achulophobia to nyctophobia, they are treatable by varying types of therapy including exposure therapy. These fears, like many other things I've stated in this book, can be dangerous to the person affected by it. If someone you know has a fear of the dark -rational or irrational- please don't make fun of them or pressure them into a situation shat makes them uncomfortable. What I just stated goes for everything I write about here, don't back them into a corner ad make them face their fear, instead, talk with them about it and slide in a couple reasons why they shouldn't be afraid of this. If that doesn't work, please do not persist.

As always and forever,
