Cate told me not to knock, not to make any noise. Still, it felt strange, walking straight into her room. It was even worse when I walked into a conversation between her and Torryn. I had not been informed that he would be joining us.
Of course he is.
Why would she go with only you?
"Hey," I announced my presence, receiving a small smile from Cate and a glare from Torryn. "I didn't know you were coming." I nodded at the winged boy.
"Why wouldn't I." I could've sworn the room grew darker when he spoke.
"Won't he stand out?" I directed my question to Cate, ignoring him.
"My wings are black- if you didn't notice- so I will blend in with the night." Torryn answered, wings flaring slightly, "however that red hair of yours, I'm not so sure about..."
"Boys, enough." Cate stood a walked out to her balcony, "Torryn is flying us out."
Flying?
You better not let him carry us out.
We can help.
No need for him.
"I think I can get out myself." I swallowed the lump in my throat, "just tell me where to go."
"The top of the cliffs? It'll be a lot faster if I fly." Torryn scoffed as we joined Cate outside.
"I said, I can do it," I spoke through my teeth, already feeling Kaleo move beneath my skin.
"Suit yourself." Torryn grabbed Cate by the waist and in a swift motion, they were in the air. Just a dot in the sky, so far away.
A growl like sound ripped from my throat, and then I let go. I rarely let Kaleo take control of my body, but we had reached a sort of understanding. He did what I wanted, or he would never be released. Plus, I knew I was faster and stronger when he took over.
I was pulled back, deep down in my black box until I could take the controls again. My vision became blue until it was nothing at all. I was alone, engulfed by nothing. No sound, no feeling. Only trust that Kaleo would safely get me to where I needed to be.
Luckily he pulled through. In a short amount of time, I was opening my eyes again, letting the crisp air fill my lungs.
I looked around, noticing Torryn looking down at the other side of the cliffs and Cate looking at me. With worry or fear, I couldn't tell. I approached them slowly, following Torryn's gaze to what looked like a small town. Not nearly as extravagant as the one we lived in.
"Let's go down, keep to the alleyways and the shadows. Do not let anyone see you." Torryn commanded as we began to descend the cliffs on a small dirt path.
✶ ✶ ✶
We were on the edge of town, slowly and carefully making our way in. There'd been no signs of life, but still, we froze at every snap of a stick or rustle of the bushes.
