I got ready and was about to leave the house when my father stopped me.
"Your mother asked me to say to you that she will call you soon. She wants to speak about something."
"Alright.", I said and he said goodbye. What was it now she wanted to speak about?
I got in the car and hit the road. It was the first time that I was driving by myself in my own car which was pretty exciting. When I put my hand on the wheel my gaze fell on my watch. Max didn't text me yet this morning. But from what I've learned about him he was probably still asleep or behind the wheel on his way to school. I would see him soon anyway. And still, even though everything was fine again between us, the little paranoia-me, which was sitting somewhere deep inside my head, was afraid that he has changed his mind. My ringtone interrupted my thoughts. I pressed on the speaker button and answered with a "Hello?".
"Veronica, here is your mother!"
"Mom! Hey, what's up? Dad told me that you'd call."
"Yes. I will fly back to Beverly Hills tomorrow!", she told me. My mother moved to Beverly Hills after the divorce. She offered me more than once to move in with her but I didn't want to leave my father. Besides she was on vacation trips all the time anyway. And here was my dad. My friends. My Maxim.
"That's why we will eat together. After school!", she decided
"But-"
"There is no but Veronica! I have already reserved a table!", she interrupted me. I had no other choice but saying yes, resistance was futile.
"Fine. Send me the address, I'll drive there after school.", I said.
"I will see you, Veronica!", she said and before I could even respond to anything she already hung up.
"Great!", I said to myself and sighed.

I arrived at school and parked next to Jacob's car. Maxim was apparently not there yet because there was no trace of his car. I grabbed my bag and Maxims' leather jacket, which I took spontaneously with me, and put it on. I adored the smell which was coming from the jacket.
"Birthday present? The car.", I heard Mia saying when I walked in the direction of the entrance.
"Yeah, my father got it for me.", I said and looked at her. The mood between us was tensed and cold. So much has happened in the past two days that I felt like I haven't seen her for ages.
"I'm sorry that I, that we, freaked out", she apologized, "we were just worried."
"I'm sorry, too. I acted like shit. Is everything okay between us?", I asked. She smiled and hugged me.
"Love you!", she said.
"Love yo-"
"You are wearing the jacket. The same one you were holding when you came home.", she noticed and her gaze fell on my/his jacket. "Is that Maxim's jacket?", she asked skeptical and mad at the same time.
"Yes.", I answered.
"Why are you wearing his jacket? Were you with him? Are you having something again?", she opened her eyes shocked. We were in front of our classroom already and some others were there, too.
"Answer me!", she demanded.
I didn't know what kind of magic it was but I could feel him entering the hallway. Our eyes met and on his serious face appeared an adorable smile. Mia noticed because of me and the other reactions that he was back. After over three weeks he was back in school and he was barely there again when he got everyone's attention.
He came to me and stopped right in front of me, elegant he leaned against the wall with his hand next to my head and put his lips on mine. I could feel him smirking into the kiss.
"Good morning, babe!", he greeted me smiling. "Mia.", he said and his face hardened.
"Morning!", I responded equally beaming.
"You have to explain a lot to me! Right now!", Mia said angrily.
"Are you her mother?", Maxim asked and looked at Mia wary. "Or why does she have to explain herself?"
"Was I talking to you?"
"I am talking to you now!" If this would've been a Western, right now would be the moment where a tumbleweed would roll between us.
"I'll tell you everything later!", I promised her when Mrs Blair opened the door with a mountain out of notebooks in her hands.
"You better do!", she threatened me and stamped angry away. Sighing I rolled my eyes.
"It will always be a mystery to me how you can be friends with someone like her.", Max said.
"She isn't that bad actually.", I said.
"Looks like you are wearing my jacket.", he noticed smiling. "I love it when you are wearing my stuff."
"It looks better on me anyway.", I asserted. No, it doesn't. He laughed and kissed me softly. When I looked into his eyes it hit me like a truck. These eyes. Beaming grey and full of intelligence.
"Are you two coming now? The exam won't write itself!", Mrs Blair said and stuck her head out of the door. She smiled when she saw us together and asked us to come inside.
"I have to talk to you later.", I said to him before we walked into the room.
"Okay...", he answered worried. I avoided.  We sat down on the empty chairs, both in one corner of the room. Mrs Blair handed out the exam sheets and waited for it to be 8:15 so we could start. When she gave us a sign that we could start we all opened the sheet. The whole four and a half hours, that were meant for the exam, I tried to concentrate and write. But from time to time my thoughts went back to the dream and the woman, which I slowly but surely knew who it was. But how could I dream about someone if I've never seen this person?
I forced myself not to think about it and it actually worked, I could focus completely on the exam! Like that, I even managed to finish it before everyone else and could leave already. In the hallway, I sat down on the floor and put my forehead on my knees.
Was it even possible to dream about someone you've never seen before? Not even on a picture. If it was possible, did she mean Maxim with him? He should know that they were fine.

"Are you okay?" I looked up and saw Maxim standing in front of me. He gave me his hand and pulled me up with no trouble.
"Yes, everything's fine.", I promised.
"What was it you wanted to talk to me about? I couldn't focus on the damn exam 'cause I've gone through everything I could've possibly done wrong.", he strokes with the back of his hand softly over my cheek. "Did I do something wrong?"
"No. No. You did nothing wrong. Everything's alright!"
"Oh thank god!", he breathed out and smiled big. "What was it then, you wanted to talk about?" How should I tell him? I took a deep breath and opened my mouth.
"I had a dream last night.", I started.
"Okay. What were you dreaming about?"
"About your mother."
"That's not funny, Veronica!", he said and stepped back.
"It wasn't supposed to be. I have to tell you that they are fine. Your parents. And that it wasn't your fault. That's what she said to me. They are happy, Maxim!"
"What the fuck is this supposed to mean, Veronica? Do you think this is something to make fun of? I can't believe that you are making fun of me! My mother told you that? In your dream? Couldn't you come up with something more believable?", there it was again. The cold tone in his voice.
"Maxim I-", I tried to explain but he interrupted me.
"No!", he shouted sharply and raised a hand to shut me up. "Don't you dare say something about that again, Veronica!"
"Maxim please, listen to me!", I begged.
"I don't want to hear anything!", he hissed and walked away.
"Nica! I'm expecting an explanation from you!", it came from Mia who was standing in the hallway too.
"Maxim!", I yelled but he didn't react.
"Nica", Mia said, "you promised me telling everything later. Now is later."
"Mia. I will tell you everything I promise you but now I have to clarify something with Max before he's gone."
"You are standing me up? For him?", she asked furiously.
"I'm sorry but it is really important, Mia. Please understand! We'll meet later and I will tell you everything! Promise!", I said and ran to catch Maxim.
"Maxim! Please wait!", I shouted. "Please!", I said meanwhile out of breath because it was really hard to keep up with him and his endless long legs. I put a hand on his arm and asked him again to wait and listen to me. What he actually did.
"I can take a joke. Really. But there is a point where the line is officially crossed and the joke is over. And I am really disappointed that you are travestying my parents' death. You, Veronica, out of all people!", his words put a lump to my throat.
"Maxim. I would never, never make fun of your parents' death. Never!", I promised him and placed my hands on his chest. "I've just told you what has happened. What I've dreamed."
"I...I don't know how I should believe you. It's all so absurd." It was.
"You have the same eyes. You and your mother.", I said and looked into his eyes. "She is beautiful!"
"Yes. She is.", he whispered and I could see his eyes filled with tears. His sharp features got softer. I raised myself on tiptoes and carefully put my lips on his.
"I love you!", I whispered against his lips. "Always remember that." He closed his eyes.
"Say that again!", he asked craving.
"Again?"
"Yes! It's the only thing I need!"
"Only those three words?", I asked surprised.
"Only those three words."
"I love you!", I said and he kissed me passionately.
