I woke up to Hermione shaking my shoulder. "Wake up!" she said, "We're going to be late to breakfast."
"What time is it?" I replied.
"Almost 7:30," she said.
"You do know that breakfast doesn't start until 8:00, don't you?" I asked.
"Yes, of course I know that. It's just that you seem like the type of person that takes half an hour to get dressed."
I rolled my eyes at her and grabbed my robes to head to the bathroom to get ready. It was true. After I got dressed I pulled my hair back into a braid. The thing I couldn't understand about people is how they can leave their hair down. I never keep my hair down because it gets in my way. When I was finished I went downstairs and found Hermione on the couch waiting for me. She was reading a spell book of sorts that looked like it was pretty interesting. I love to read anything, even if it means taking longer to do my homework. As I came in she looked up from her book and said, "Ready to go?"
I nodded and we walked down the stairs together. I didn't even bother to wait for Harry and Ron, I knew that they would probably sleep for another thirty minutes. As we walked into the Grand Hall I saw people turn around in their seats to get a good look at me. It was very awkward. I was usually a quiet, shy girl with people I didn't know so I wasn't used to all of this attention. I was just hoping that it was going to work in my favor.
When we were done eating Hermione and I started to head to our first class, which was potions in the dungeon. I could already tell that we were going to be best friends. I know it sounds cheesy but it's true, I could feel it.
As we walked down into the dungeons I felt a wave of cold hit my skin. We finally made it to the class and walked in. I was already scared of being in a class in the dungeons, let alone seeing all of the pickled animals in jars around the room. I glanced around and found that Professor Snape was nowhere to be seen. Hermione motioned me over to an empty table and we sat down. Since we were fifteen minutes early we quizzed each other on ingredients in some of the potions. After we were done we made a bet that whoever answered the most questions right would get to ask a question to the other person that they would have to answer.
After the bell rang students started to file in to class. There were four seats at each table so Harry and Ron sat with us. I heard Ron whisper something to Harry about Hermione and I was about to ask what when a man speed walked into the room. He was wearing black robes and had dark eyes and greasy, black hair. I know that I grew up at Hogwarts but I had only seen this teacher a couple of times. When I did see him he wouldn't hesitate to correct me in whatever I was doing. However, sometimes he would pass me with a soft smile on his face before it flickered back to being hard again.
He started to call out the register and when he got to Harry's name he stopped and looked up. Snape then said, "Ah, Harry Potter our new celebrity, along with his sister," He shifted his stare to look at me, "Mr. and Ms. Potter can you tell me what I would get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?"
Harry looked completely lost so I answered for him. "You would get a sleeping potion called the Draught of Living Death," I said.
Snape looked like he was about to smack me, but I guess he thought better of it because he then asked, "Where would you look if I told you to find a bezoar?"
"You would look in your potion's cabinet," Harry muttered under his breath.
I gave him a hard stare that said, "Are you trying to kill us?" I then said, "A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat."
Snape stared straight into my eyes and looked like he was going to kill me. To my surprise his expression turned soft for a moment before going back to a hard stare. This was the first time this year that that had happened. He then said, "Thank you, Ms. Potter. Mr. Potter one point wil be taken from Gryffindor for your cheek."
The rest of the class Snape was picking on Harry. We were told to create a potion that would cure boils. It was one of the easiest potions I have ever made and Hermione and I were done in about ten minutes. After that we helped Harry and Ron with their potion. Snape came around to check everybody's potion. When he got to mine and Hermione's he gave us an Outstanding. He then turned to Harry and Ron's potion and said, "This potion is too good for a couple dunderheads like you. One point from Gryffindor for copying off of another group."
I thought that this was completely unfair since Snape had never seen Harry make potions before and didn't know how well that they would turn out to be. "That's not fair, Professor. You don't know how well Harry does on potions and he didn't copy off of us. I finished early so I helped Harry with his potion. I didn't even do much I just told him ow to crush the snake fangs," I said.
"Ms. Potter you will serve detention tomorrow, helping me sort ingredients into the right shelves. Meet me here at 7:30," Snape said. I opened my mouth to argue but Ron kicked me from under the table.
He then went to grade everybody else's potion. When he got to Draco he couldn't stop muttering praise and it seemed to everyone in the class that Draco was Snape's favorite.
The rest of the day went by smoothly and I could already tell that Professor McGonagall would be my favorite teacher. Maybe it was because I had grown up with her raising me so I knew what to do so that I wouldn't upset her but she was amazing. She would turn animals into goblets of wine like it was the easiest thing on Earth. Defense Against the Dark Arts was easily my favorite subject but I didn't know about Professor Quirrell. He wasn't a very good teacher for that particular subject and he was nervous every time he spoke or answered a question. He even fainted when he took role and said my and Harry's name.
After a long day I finished my homework and got ready for bed. I gave Astro food and then remembered that I get to ask Hermione a question for answering more questions then her. I waited until she came into our dorm and then said, "You do know that I get to ask a question?"
She then nodded her head and smiled, "Yes, but I was only a question off so don't get a big head."
I thought for a moment. I wanted to ask an important question but not something too personal because we just met. "Do you like it here?" I asked.
"Yes," she said, "I do wish that -." She cut herself off.
"What?" I said.
"Nothing, I will tell you later," she said before turning off the light and going to sleep.
I couldn't go to sleep. I wanted to know the answer to her question. I stayed up a little longer studying potions because I knew that Snape would keep bothering me with questions until I got one wrong. After a while I fell into a deep sleep.
