The train stopped and we were led out. We were told to leave our belongings. A tall figure I knew as Hagrid was walking toward us.
"Hagrid?" Harry asked. I wondered how he knew Hagrid but figured that we would talk about that later.
"Oh, hey there Harry and Sophia. Follow me first years, first years follow me now!" his loud voice boomed across the station, "You will get your first look at Hogwarts in just a sec." Once all of the first years were close to Hagrid he said, "Okay now, first years, gather around, get in the boats, four at a time. Harry, Ron and I got into a boat, followed by the girl named Hermione. The boats then made their way across the Black Lake on their own. As we rounded a corner Hogwarts came into view. I heard gasps and "ooooohs" and even I was amazed at how beautiful Hogwarts is at night with all of its turrents and towers.
Once we got to the other side, Professor McGonagall was waiting for us. She introduced herself and I saw that most of the kids looked intimidated. I wasn't surprised as Professor McGonagall is a very stern dark-haired witch dressed in emerald robes. She looked down at us and said, "Welcome to Hogwarts. Once you walk through these doors you will be sorted into your House. Your House will be like your family while you are at Hogwarts as you will spend most of your time with the people within your House. There are four Houses, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Good luck to each and every one of you." She then opened the huge, wooden doors and led us into the Great Hall. There were four long tables taking up most of the space and at each table were older kids sitting with their house. She led us to the front of the room and said, "When I call your name walk up to the sorting hat and place it on your head. After the hat sorts you into your House go sit at the table with your House." She then took a list out of her robes and started to call names.
"Hannah Abott!" A girl with blond pigtails walked up to the front of the room and put the hat on. After a moment of hesitation the hat screamed...
"HUFFLEPUFF!"
"Terry Boot!"
"RAVENCLAW!"
Lavender Brown became the first new Gryffindor and Millicent Bulstrode became the first new Slytherin. The list went on and on. I kept thinking that there was some mistake and my name wouldn't be called at all. I them heard a familiar name be called.
"Hermione Granger!" I secretly hoped that she would get in the same House as me, but I also knew that Ron wouldn't be to happy about that.
"GRYFFINDOR!"
"Ronald Weasley!" I laughed as they used his full name. Ron walked up to the hat looking nervous. I would be too since all of the Weasleys had gotten in Gryffindor for at least the last two generations.
"GRYFFINDOR!" the hat said. I saw Ron let go the breath of air he was holding in.
"Draco Malfoy!" I knew that Draco wanted to get in Slytherin, but personally I would put him in Hufflepuff because once you get to know him he is a real softie.
"SLYTHERIN!" I sighed. I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up.
There weren't many names left to call. Parkinson, Moon, Nott, Longbottom, two twin girls with the last name of Patil, Perks, Then finally, "Harry Potter!" Harry walked up to the stool and put the hat on his head. He had the hat on his head for almost a minute before the hat screamed, "GRYFFINDOR!" I breathed a sigh of relief, but then I realized that all of my close friends are in Gryffindor and I couldn't bare to leave Harry again.
"Sophia Potter!" I slowly walked up the stairs and put the hat on. I hadn't noticed before but the whole Hall of people were craning their eyes to get a look at Harry and I. Almost as soon as I put the hat on I heard a voice inside of my head.
"Oooh, you're even harder than your brother. You have a great mind I see, also a lot of courage. You are very determined to prove yourself. You would do great in Slytherin." the hat said.
At this my heart turned as cold as ice. "Please put me with my brother," I thought.
"Gryffindor, you say. Hmm are you sure, you could do great things in Slytherin."
I started to get annoyed so I snapped, "I just told you that I don't want to be in Slytherin!" I'm pretty sure that the whole Hall heard me say that.
"Quite a temper too I see. Slytherin would lead you to fame and fortune. Well if you say so..."
"GRYFFINDOR!"
I breathed a great sigh of relief as I walked over to the Gryffindor table and sat down. Fred and George suddenly appeared on either side of me and said, "We were starting to get worried, weren't we Freddie," he said as Fred nodded, "We heard your outburst and saw that you were getting mad and thought for sure that you would get put in Slytherin."
"Well, I didn't" I said smugly and looked to the front of the room where the last person had just been sorted into Ravenclaw.
"Thank you, thank you. Now everybody quiet down now, I have something important to say," Dumbledore said, "We have a change of staff this year. Everyone please welcome Professor Quirell the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. I have only a couple words to say then we can eat. Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you."
Everyone started clapping but I didn't know whether to laugh or not. I had known Dumbledore for a while but I had no idea what those words mean. My thoughts were interrupted when Fred asked
"Potatoes?" I looked down in amazement. The table was full of food, chicken, porkchops, chips, pudding, gravy, ketchup, peas, carrots, potatoes, and mint humbugs. I put a little bit of everything on my plate and started eating.
"That does look good, " someone said sadly. I looked around and saw Nearly Headless Nick.
"Nick!" I screamed as people turned to look at me. I got up from my seat and gave him a "hug." Well technically it wasn't a hug, I just went through him as he "patted" my back. I know what you're thinking, "Doesn't it feel weird to go through a ghost?" The answer is yes, but I have done it so many times it doesn't feel different to me. I sat down after we said our goodbyes.
"How do you know him?" Harry asked. I didn't think about that.
"He wished me good luck when we first came in," I lied. By the looks of it he believed me.After dinner Percy led us back to our common room. Percy was one of our House prefects. He led us to a painting that held a heavy lady in it.
"Caput Draconis," Percy said as the painting swung open to reveal a passage way. We followed him through the passage way an into the Gryffindor common room. It was a cosy, round room decorated in crimson wallpaper and armchairs. "Girls' dormitories are on the left while boys' are on the right," Percy said before sitting on a couch. I was so sleepy that I went straight up to the girls' dorm and through a door labeled "First Years." The girl named Hermione was also up there getting ready for bed.
"Hi," she said as I walked in, "I don't believe I know your name."
"It's Sophia Potter," I said shaking her hand
Her eyes widened and she asked, "So it is true then?"
"Yes," I responded. I looked around the room and saw that my trunk, along with Astro had been paced on the bed next to Hermione's. I took Astro out of his cage and gave him a piece of chicken I had brought from dinner. I then took his water and food bowls out of my trunk and filled them. I changed into my pajamas and got curled up under my covers with Astro beside me. Before long I was asleep.
