"They seem to be a talented bunch, if the---"
"Nonsense, just a starry-eyed bunch of amateurs. They can't last a minute against us" Vincent hollered interrupting Mihir.
"Careful Vince, your head could get too heavy for you body"
Though Blacks were the most competent and most loved band out of the seven that were considered for the Melos music venture, the startling entry of offbeat 'Ensemble' had gained a lot of attention. Thus 'The backs' were in Mihir's Condo trying to make strategical decisions to ensure they stayed on top of the game.
"Its an insult for us to be competing with these newbies. Do we even have to be associated with Melos?" Vincent voiced again as they clicked on Ensemble's yet another YouTube upload. Wasn't it wise to know your enemy.
"Don't forget that we too were newbies not long ago" Mihir slapped Vincent's hand away from his slice of pizza.
They too have been a just another starry-eyed amateur bunch of five, dreaming to make it big in the music industry. The trained vocalist Vincent and humble guitarist Mihir were practically joint at hip from school days. While Vignesh, the specialist at keys was the kind knight who protected the gifted Asad, the mute who mastered wind instruments. An interesting bet that led to the later duo along with their friend and unofficial tutor: Samar to rescue the former from humiliation during a gig, brought them close.
Their initial days as a band had saw them being hungry, hurt, humiliated and winning through the struggles with sheer dedication. Samar who had eminent knowledge on music also had a grasp on how people's mind work. He knew it would take more than talent to win. He did the math, played the right card and never gave up eventually bringing their band to limelight.
And they were not ready lose their hard-earned place to Ensemble who seemed to be following their path.
Out of the Six other bands being considered Samar knew Ensemble was the worthy rival they would have to defeat. Their unconventional music had become increasingly popular as days passed and their fan base though nowhere near the blacks, was astonishing large for a supposedly new entrant. Though their frequent live performances which won hearts had stopped abruptly over the past few months, theirs YouTube uploads were doing that job just fine.
'Symphony, Rio, Alex, Rohit and Samantha... New Sweethearts in the town.' the tabloids proclaimed.
"Toddlers" Scoffed Vincent.
Deep down it was Vincent's fear that he veiled with arrogance.
Samar knew they needed a new twist to keep people hooked. No matter how brilliant your work is, the world will always want something new. He wanted a trump card, a surprise to win over people again. And his mind worked.
"Vicky... Book tables in all hotels with music amenities and gigs." was all the brooding Gentleman said, leaving his band in a confused stupor.

When the guitar note ended, there was absolute silence which was broken by thunderous applause.
Even Samar couldn't escape her bewitching voice. Absolutely hypnotised by her performance, he stopped analysing the notes for flaws.
Asad's eyes were glistening. Soulful voices always did that to him. Before anyone could stop Asad ran towards the backstage with other four tailing behind him, no doubt searching for the girl.
Samar hadn't answered the "whys" from others when he had dragged them from hotels to gigs to street singers relentlessly. They were annoyed yet never uttered a single "no" to him. And Samar hoped they won't be displeased with the announcement he was about to make. Even if they were, he wouldn't care.
Walking past Vignesh, Samar came face to face with the wide-eyed girl being hugged by Asad.
"Sorry our friend just got a little overwhelmed by your performance." Vignesh apologised while Mihir wrenched Asad away.
"You are them... You are 'The Blacks'. I have seen you on tabloids." she said pointing Vincent.
Careless fool!! Samar cursed internally remembering the incident when Vincent was negligent enough to remove his mask in public.
"We were auditioning..." Samar pronounced gauging her reaction, paralysing other in apparent shock. Though wide-eyed, a smile tugged at the corner of her lips.
Hope
Samar smirked.
"Welcome aboard Ms...."
"Arunthati" she smirked back.
