5 years later
It was Thursday, unusual day to go out drinking even in one of the busiest cities in the US but my brother and I had a great reason to. January 24 five years ago I was sentenced to five years on probation after I slept with my student. What five years it has been. When my probation officer called me this morning to make an appointment with me I was the happiest man alive.
My brother was on the edge the whole day and when I came home from work he offered to go meet my probation officer with me. I agreed and off we went. The officer just gave me some papers to sign and with a wish of good luck and happy life he let me go. I was officially free.
Mikey told me we had to celebrate and although I had to teach tomorrow, I agreed. We went out to the city and since I was starving we agreed to go to a restaurant first. I ordered a steak and a glass of red wine and it might have been because I was so happy but I have never had a better meal in my life.
Mikey was smiling like an idiot and when I asked why he just shrugged and told me he was just glad that I was happy. I was set on enjoying the night as much as I could. I was finally pleased with how my life was going. I had a great job, I had a place to live, I had my brother by my side, my probation was over and I was positive that everything would be only better.
We finished our meal and after we paid Mikey told me he needed to go to the bathroom so I told him I'd have a smoke outside. When I stepped out I bumped into a guy who was looking at his phone not seeing where he was going. Something about him felt familiar and when he looked up my breath got hitched in my throat.
Memories from five years ago started flooding my mind. His eyes, his hair, his voice, his tattoos, his smile, his smell, the way he laughed, the way he talked, the way he curled his lip when he was concentrating, the way he walked, how he liked his coffee, his favorite food, how he looked when he slept - all of it was coming back to me, hitting me like a ton of bricks.
I was speechless and so was he. I felt like it was yesterday since I saw him last and I didn't know what to do. He stepped back a little watching my face and putting his phone away.
"Frank." I spoke up first.
"Gerard." He said surprised.
"How are you doing?" I asked politely.
"Good. What about you?" He asked me back still pretty much shocked.
"I'm fine. So...are you in college or...?" I asked kind of awkwardly.
"Actually, not anymore. It just wasn't for me." He told me.
"Oh."
Another moment passed as we stared at each other. I really took in his appearance for the first time. He had a tiny beard going on, his hair was a little shorter than I remembered, under the hem of his sweater I could see some new tattoos but other than that he looked just the same.
"What are you doing here?" He asked smiling a little.
"I was just on a dinner with my brother, we were...um nevermind. We were just hungry and wanted to spoil ourselves." I told him. I wanted to tell him we were celebrating but I didn't want to ruin the moment with bad memories. It was over and I was starting from scratch. I didn't want to be 'that teacher' anymore.
"Why are you here?" I asked him back.
"I'm here with-" He started but was cut off by my brother who just walked out of the restaurant.
"Frank Iero." Mikey stated and looked the boy up and down.
"Actually, it's Baker now." Frank said and subtly touched the ring on his finger. My eyes traveled to his hand which was soon taken by another hand.
"Gerard Way." The person spoke up and when I looked at him I couldn't believe my eyes. It really was Zacky Baker, Frank's ex but I guessed now he was his husband.
"Zacky just got back from tour so we can finally celebrate his birthday as well as our anniversary." Frank said and looked at Zacky.
I could see they were in love and surprisingly, I wished them all the best. They looked great together and as long as they were happy I was a fan of their relationship.
We stood there in silence long enough for it to become awkward, at least to Mikey who cleared his throat and looked at me. I realized that he was probably very uncomfortable since he never really got to meet either of them and so I smiled at him and turned my attention back to the couple in front of us.
"Well, it was nice meeting you. Have a great night." I told them and after they thanked we all said goodbye and me and Mikey walked away.
I turned around to see that Frank was also looking back and we both smiled, him giving a little wave before he disappeared inside. I turned back to see where I was going and smiled to myself.
"What's that smile for?" Mikey asked me as he led me to his favorite bar.
"It's just funny that I met him on the day my probation ended, don't you think?" I said.
"Yeah, it kind of is." Mikey nodded.
"A true reset." I mumbled to myself and continued by Mikey's side ready to enjoy my night.
