Fin's just coming back inside as I cross the lounge into the kitchen, his cheeks pink with cold.
"Walter's hair's getting long, huh?" he says as I unplug the toaster.
"Uh, yeah, I guess," I mumble distractedly.
"Are you sure you're ok?" Fin asks, and I realise that I'm trying to put the toaster in the pantry.
"Yeah," I sigh, "I'm fine. Just got a bit on my mind."
"I can tell." He leans against the counter, the morning light filtering through the window behind him making his spiked-up bleached hair look like a halo. "Is it anything I can help with?"
"No," I say, "it's not anything anyone can help with."
"You're sure?"
"Pretty sure."
Fin shrugs, then pulls out his phone. With a few taps and a little swiping, he finds what he's looking for and holds out the phone, screen towards me. "Thought you'd be interested in this," he says.
I take the phone, reading aloud from the news article displayed on it. "Mysterious Einstein-Rosenberg bridge forms over Bright, Australia, leaves astronomers baffled. Just days ago, an unexplained and little-explored phenomenon known as an Einstein-Rosenberg bridge – or more commonly a "worm hole" – was detected forming over Bright, a small town in the Alpine shire of Victoria, Australia. Astronomers say this is not the first of these phenomena to appear in recent years, as a similar occurrence took place in New Mexico in 2011." I look up from the article, hoping that nothing is showing on my face.
"What do you think?" Fin asks, taking back his phone.
"It's really interesting," I say, "I didn't know all that was going on."
"Yeah, I figured," he grins, "if you knew you wouldn't have shut up about it."
"You know me too well," I laugh, hoping I don't sound as forced to him as I do to me.
"Wasn't last time the whole thing with Thor and that robot?" he asks, and I nod. "Maybe it's another one of those, or something like that."
"I don't think so, I mean," I continue, "it's pretty unlikely. How many extra-terrestrial visits can Earth have in a few years? New York was only months ago, and the Thor robot thing wasn't too long before that, and anyway what are the chances of it happening here?" I stop, realising that I probably sound gushy and frantic.
"It's not impossible," Fin protests, "I'm just saying."
"Yeah, but it's unlikely."
"Ok, calm down," he smiles, and I roll my eyes. "Anyway," he continues, "I was gonna ask if you wanted to come down to the Arboretum with me. You know, bring the dogs, let them run around."
"You left out the part about your soccer ball," I point out, but I'm relieved that the conversation has drifted away from Einstein-Rosenberg bridges and extra-terrestrials. "But yeah, sounds good."
As Fin leaves to get his ball and a jacket, I suddenly remember Loki. Shit. I can't just leave him here, so how am I going to bring him with us?
"Are you in my head?" I whisper, thinking the words as hard as I can.
"I don't need to be."
"Ok, fine." I chew the inside of my cheek, running possibilities in my mind. "How good are you at hiding?"
"Darling I can change the way I look in an instant. I believe you would call it shape shifting?"
"What?" I hiss, and I think I can feel him laughing. Maybe feeling isn't the right word, but somehow I know that he finds it funny. "You didn't think to tell me before?"
"You never asked," he points out.
"So... you can just become anyone you want to?"
"To a certain degree, yes. Why?"
"I can't leave you here, and I can't let Fin know you're here either." I lean back against the bench, noticing for a second how weirdly normal it feels to say something aloud and have someone answer in my head.
"Why must I come with you everywhere?" he gives a noticeable sigh, then I sense his cool resignation. "If you insist, I can find a way."
Hi all, these last few chapters have been kinda short, but since I'm basically re-writing the story and I don't wanna mess it up too badly (there are some parts of the original I actually don't hate) I have to sort of space out events a bit. Once I get things in the plot a bit more established, the chapters will probably get longer, but until then they're probably gonna be about this length.
