Hehehe I love the internet, full credits to this artist - you're doing God's work :)

January in Bright is one of my favourite times of the year. Everything is bustling with activity and life, and the weather is perfect for swimming in the Ovens River. On New Years Eve, I grab my bathers from the cupboard and slip them on under my clothes, then drag Loki out to the car.

"Where are we going?" he grumbles, "it's almost ten o'clock."

"Ask no questions and you'll get no lies," I grin, hopping into the driver's seat and buckling my seatbelt.

Despite it being after sunset, the air is still warm when we get to the river and there are people everywhere. I don't hesitate to jump in off the concrete diving board and into the water. It's a slight shock at first, but I get used to it quickly.

As per usual, Loki sits on the edge and watches me swim, waving away mosquitoes as they try to bite him.

"There's a pair of board shorts in the back seat!" I call after a while, "Come down here with me!"

"Can't I just watch you?" he calls back, not moving from his place on the bank.

I look around at the groups of people – couples and families alike – then swim towards the edge. I wade up out of the river, my hair dripping water behind me as I climb up the grassy slope to Loki.

"Come on," I say, sitting down beside him and draping an arm over his shoulders, "it'll be fun. You don't even have to jump off anything."

"What's in it for me?" he asks, drawing back and studying my face.

"You get to go swimming in the dark with your girlfriend, on New Years Eve, in summer."

He sighs, then gets up and walks over to the car.

Ok, let'sgo." I say when he returns. I wade back out into the river, kicking off the rocky bottom when it's deep enough and swimming a few strokes, then stopping to check if Loki's following. He is, and I tread water on the spot until he reaches me.

"Are you going to explain why we're in the middle of a river so late at night, or do I have to wait?" he asks, looking around at everyone else.

"It's New Years Eve," I grin, "we're waiting for the fireworks."

"Fireworks?"

"You don't have them in Asgard?" Seeing his head shake, I continue, "they're colourful explosions. We set them off on big occasions, they're fun."

"Humans," he mutters, shaking his head again.

We mess around in the water for the next few hours. I eventually convince him to jump off the ledge on the other side of the river, then we just sit on the rock until finally, people begin to count down to midnight.

"Twenty-nine, twenty-eight, twenty-seven, twenty-six, twenty-four... come on, join in!" I say, punching Loki's arm lightly.

"What are you all counting down for?" he asks, frowning at everyone.

"Midnight! Just do it."

He rolls his eyes, but starts counting anyway. "Eleven, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."

There's a massive bang, then the first fireworks erupt into the night sky. People everywhere are splashing water into the air, hugging each other, cheering and laughing.

I take Loki's face between my hands and kiss his lips, almost slipping off the rock. His fingers dance over my wet skin, making me giggle.

"Happy New Year," I whisper when we draw apart, watching the fireworks reflected in his eyes.

It's not too long until most of the other people have left, and we're practically alone in the river. The only sounds are the occasional shout or laugh from the people still out in the park or on the streets of the town, and one or two cars passing by.

"We should probably get home soon," I say, looking around at the empty river and shadowed banks.

"Why's that?" Loki asks softly, his eyes never leaving the stars above us.

"Well, uh..." I start, but am interrupted by his hand on my leg. I glance up at him, taking in his profile outlined by the moonlight.

"They're beautiful," he whispers, raising a hand to indicate the various constellations. "Southern cross, saucepan, Alpha Centauri."

"Yeah," I smile, "that's them."

We sit in silence for a few moments more before he reaches a hand across and tilts my face towards him, placing a soft kiss on my lips. He withdraws almost instantly, but remains close enough that I can see the individual droplets of water on his skin.

"Thankyou, (Y/N)," he says softly.

"What for?"

"Everything, I suppose." He gives a little huff of laughter, his eyes darting around us.

"Oh." It's my turn to laugh now. "You're welcome, then." I lean forwards, eliminating the few centimetres of space between us. His hand brushes up my thigh, over my hip and comes to rest on my waist, drawing me up onto his lap. I let my hands settle on his shoulders, then his neck, then tangle in his hair as the kiss deepens. I shiver as his hands move around my back, his fingers slipping under the waist band of my bathers.

"I could kiss you forever," he whispers, his lips moving to my jaw, then down my neck and along my collar bone.

"Forever's a long time," I sigh, glancing furtively at the bank.

"Time is... unimportant," he breathes against my skin. "You're important."

"I am?" I pause for a moment at his nod, then say, "we could take this somewhere else."

His eyes flick up to mine, dark and serious. "Do you want that?"

I nod. "Do you?"

"Yes," he murmurs. "Yes, I do."
