Thankfully, it's late enough that the dogs are allowed off leash when we get to the beach. I kick off my shoes and shove them behind a fence post, balancing the box of food in one hand. Loki does the same, then looks around. The wind blows his hair into his face, making him screw his eyes shut.

"It's sheltered around the corner," I call over my shoulder, already jogging across the wet sand.

We find a spot on top of one of the many rocks near the cliff, settling on top of it where we can see the ocean and the sun sinking down into it. Everything gleams dark orange and red in the dying light, making the sea look less like water and more like lava. The fish and chips are hot and salty and greasy, and we finish them in a matter of minutes.

"Would it be crazy to go swimming now?" I ponder aloud, resting my head on Loki's shoulder.

"No," he says, "not at all. The ocean is beautiful."

"Let's go a little farther down." I get up, grabbing the rubbish from our meal and whistling to the dogs. I scramble through the rocks and into the shallow water, glancing back over my shoulder to check that Loki's coming. He's standing on the rock, one hand shielding his eyes against the sun and looking at me. "Everything ok?" I call.

"You're beautiful!" He yells back, a smile apparent in his voice.

"So are you coming or not?" I dance backwards, water splashing around my ankles. He climbs towards me, but I have a head start. I run through the shallow little waves, checking behind me every few seconds to see him chasing after me.

"Slow down!" He calls, and I laugh. I only do as he says when we've gone around the corner, closed off on all sides by the ocean and the cliffs.

"Are we far enough down, do you think?" he asks sarcastically, slowing to a walk.

"Yeah," I wade out onto the dry sand and begin taking off my clothes, folding them up and setting them on a rock. I leave the fish and chips rubbish with them, then when I'm down to my underwear I turn back around.

"Isn't this a public beach?" Loki asks, looking up at the top of the cliffs.

"Yeah, but it's closed off. And anyway, what's the difference between this and a bikini?"

Loki sighs, then makes his own pile of clothes on the rock next to mine. He takes my hand, wading out into the water. It's still lit up fiery orange, casting our shadows behind us in two dark lines, almost not even human shaped.

A wave crashes against my chest, and I let out a squeal because it's so cold, even though we're in the middle of summer. I dive under the next wave, relishing in the silky water against my skin. Loki dives next, coming up and shaking water from his hair in a glittering halo.

We swim long enough that all the light from the sunset is gone and we can clearly see the stars in the night sky.

"Southern cross," I murmur, pointing it out. "Big dipper..."

"Saucepan," Loki finishes, laying his hand over mine. I smile.

"Can I say something kinda crazy?" I ask him, already forming the words in my head.

"Stop," he cuts me off. "You don't want to say that."

"Yes I do," I turn to face him, frowning. "I definitely want to say it."

"You can't," he says.

"I can, and I will. I love you, Loki."

He freezes, an expression I would only describe as a mixture of shock and "mild terror" crossing his face. "You can't say that," he whispers.
