Chapter XIX - Hazel

AFTER THE DAY WE HAD ALL HAD, SLEEP WAS PRETTY HIGH ON OUR LIST of priorities. It didn't take much convincing to sort out the tents either, Jason was with Percy, Leo was with Frank, Piper was with Annabeth and I was all alone. I was secretly pleased. Annabeth had protested at first, not wanting to leave Percy alone after the events of the morning, but after we explained to her that it probably wasn't such a good idea to have the two lovebirds together in a tent, all alone throughout the night, she stormed off, blushing red as a tomato.

I was in a bright orange KampEezy. It was fluorescent, and practically hurt to look at, which really wasn't helping me sleep, so I got up with a sigh. It was a beautiful night, the moon was glowing, making the rippling grass look like a sea of silver, and the wind was blowing gently, rustling the leaves in the trees all around us. There was a stream down below, and the sound of the water flowing over the stones soothed me as I layed down, staring up at the sky.

It took me a whole half an hour to realise Leo was there. He was watching me quietly, his warm brown eyes gleaming and his curly hair blowing in the wind. I sat up, grinning sheepishly. "Hi."

He smiled lopsidedly at me. "It took you 41 minutes to notice I was here." he said, checking his watch. " What's wrong?" I couldn't help it. I was tired, shaken, riding out the wave of an adrenaline rush, I burst into tears. Leo scooted over and hugged me. I was surprised. He always looked kinda scrawny, but he felt strong, and I leaned my head against his shoulder.

"It's just, it all seems useless. I feel useless. If we're not in Rome soon, it's all over. We may as well just be dead." I sobbed, as he looked down at me.

"You're not useless Hazel." he said softly and I looked up in surprise. "There is something I haven't been telling you." he continued and I brushed away the tears.

"What?" I asked and he leaned his forehead against mine. I breathed in surprise.

"Hazel," he started, and I shushed him.

Then I kissed him.

My eyes closed as we kissed, locked together under the moonlight. It felt right, better than anything I had had with Frank, less awkward. I wrapped my hands around Leo's neck as he pulled me closer, deepening the kiss.

When we finally pulled away, I was breathless. Leo was looking at me happily. "Well that's what I was going to say, so..." he trailed off and kissed me again.

Frank

I HAD NEVER BEEN SO ANGRY IN MY LIFE. HAZEL, THE GIRL I LOVED, WAS cheating on me with Leo. About ten minutes ago, I had got up to take over from Leo on watch duty, to see him kissing my girlfriend, who wasn't even resisting! I stormed back to my tent angrily, fuming,

Leo

I FELT ON TOP OF THE WORLD. HAZEL HAD KISSED ME! THE MOMENT could've lasted forever if it wasnt for the snarling. I broke away from Hazel as she stood up. I drew my hammer. There was silence for a moment but then all Hades broke loose as a monster burst from the woods.
