I woke up to Maisie snuggled into my side in the exact same position as she was last night. I decided to let her sleep for as long as she wants. I just decided to go on my phone until she woke up.
My plan was to have a relax day. Watch movies, eat popcorn, play board games. But that all changed when I got a text from Daniel.
Daniel invited me and Maisie to come over their house so that the girls could play together.
I knew how excited Maisie was about the possibility of having new friends to play with. So I said yes.
We went over to their house at around 1. I made sure to wear something that covers up the name on my wrist. I couldn't risk Daniel finding out. Not yet at least.
When we arrived at the house, Maisie couldn't have been more excited. And by the looks of the two young girls impatiently waiting on the front porch, Daniels little sisters couldn't wait either.
"Hello Byron!" Daniel said cheerfully.
"Hi Daniel." I could help but say in a less excited tone.
"This is Sienna and this is Elowen." Daniel said pointing to the girls one at a time.
Sienna and Elowen are very clearly identical twins. Both of them are absolutely beautiful.
I was amazed at how he could tell them apart so easily.
With red hair and cute little dresses, they welcomed Maisie into their home with a big hug.
All three of the girls ran up to the second story of the house to go play in the twins' room. Me and Daniel took a seat on the couch in the living room.
It was quite awkward. I didn't know what to say so I decided to say exactly what I was thinking, "Your sisters are beautiful."
"Oh, yeah. They sure are something. They look exactly like our mom, but I got our dads genes I guess. They got lucky with the good genes of the family. Perfect skin, perfect hair, perfect smile. They don't have a care in the world." he responded to my statement.
"I can't imagine you got all the bad genes, right?" I responded.
"I got most of them. The bad skin, bad hair, I had braces for 4 years, I got stuck with the depression and anxiety. All stuff that is part of the bad genes"
"Well I was supposed to have braces but my family never had enough money so my teeth straightened out as much as possible on their own." I couldn't help but notice the sadness in Daniels eyes after I said that. Like he felt sympathy for the poor boy sitting across from him.
"Both my parents died last year. I've been raising the two girls and our other brother and sister since. Before my mom and dad died it was a blessing to have that many siblings. But now that they're gone and I'm the one providing, it's a curse."
"You have other siblings?"
"Yeah. My brother is 9, Henry, and my sister is 18 months, Lana."
I looked up on the wall to see a big family portrait of their family. It looked as though Daniel was a little younger and as though the twins look a bit younger too. There was also a young looking boy with dark brown hair and a big huge smile on his face. I can only assume that's Henry. There was also a newborn in the picture that I'm assuming is Lana.
"I wish my dad was dead. He left me and my mom when I was 10. My stepdad died when I was 15. And my mom is a pregnant alcoholic." I stated with sadness laced in my voice.
"I'm sorry. Why did your dad leave?" Daniel asked curiously.
"My dad was very religious, so when he found out I was gay he hated me so much that he just couldn't live in the same house as me."
"I'm gay too, but my parents were okay with it." he paused, thinking. After a minute of hesitation he said, "Do you ever wonder how your little sister will find her soulmate. Or even what her symbol will be?"
"I think about it all the time. And recently I've been thinking about my new little sister too. She's not even born yet and I still can't wait to see her grow up."
In that instant my phone rang. When I picked it up and saw that it was Donald, moms fiance, calling, I just pressed decline. But when it rang again I answered it out of curiosity.
(on the phone)
"Hello?"
"Hi Byron, you need to get to the hospital."
"Why, Donald?"
"Your mom went into early labor and she wants you here. But she doesn't want Maisie to come, so find somewhere that she can stay."
"Ughh, okay Donald. I'll be there soon."
(phone call ends)
"Daniel?" I asked cautiously. He was my only hope."Yeah, Byron?"
"Can you please, please, please watch Maisie while I run to the hospital?"
"Of course I can. Is everything alright?"
"My mom went into early labor. She wants me there but not Maisie." I said quickly gathering my belongings.
"Okay well good luck. Bye Byron!"
"Bye Daniel!"
I rushed out the door. As much as I didn't support this pregnancy, it is still my mother and still my sister. And because of my moms age, it was a high-risk pregnancy which resulted in labor 10 weeks early.
After I parked my car in the lot, I ran inside the giant hospital building. I asked the lady at the front desk what room my mother was in.
Room 206.
The same room Maisie was born in.
I opened the door to the room cautiously. Luckily nothing happened yet. My mother is still pregnant, although in labor, and Donald looks like he's about to pass out. No wonder my mom wanted me here.
"Oh Byron, honey! I'm about to have to push. They said that it could be dangerous if she stays in there any longer." she said with tears streaming down her face.
"I got you mom."
That was the first time I called her "mom" instead of "mother" for the first time since she picked up the beer bottle.
A larger set of doctors and nurses came into the room. It was all set. Everything in place. All my mom has to do now is push this tiny baby out.
I've decided to stand by my mothers head. I grabbed onto her hand so that she has something to hold. Donald officially passed out about 5 minutes ago.
My mother pushed and pushed until beads of sweat were dripping down her forehead and she began crying.
It's been an hour.
They've decided that this baby needs to come out or she will not survive.
My mother had an emergency c-section.
I still stayed in the room with her.
Bailey Grace Gills was born November 14 at 5:18 pm.
Absolutely gorgeous. Stunning. And I was the first family member to see her. I cut the umbilical cord. But as soon as she came, she was gone even quicker.
Rushed away by all the nurses.
An hour later I saw her with tubes all attached to her. Not breathing or eating on her own. It was heartbreaking.
I've never wanted to hold something so bad in my whole entire life, besides Maisie.
I'm already attached to Bailey.
