DANIEL'S POV

The bell rings, and the school day is over. Finally. Thank God it's Friday.

"I think I totally bombed that quiz," Jack groans as we come out of our last class of the day. "Mr. Pulse always makes some tough trick questions."

"Like number six?" Zach asks. "I couldn't remember the atomic weight of Plutonium."

"Don't ask me," Jack says. "All I know is that when that quiz comes back, my mom is going to be pissed."

Jonah and Corbyn laugh along with Zach and Jack, and I crack a smile, only half paying attention to their conversation. I'm scanning the crowds for someone, and as we're turning down another hallway, I see her. Before we turn, I call out, "Happy birthday!" She looks up just before I disappear, and gives me a little wave as a response. I smile.

"Woah, boy," Jonah says, cuffing me around the back of my neck and pulling me closer. "What was that all about?"

That was Harper Moon. She's in my AP History class fifth period, and she has no idea who I am.

But instead of telling the boys that, I just say, "It wasn't about anything."

"Yeah right," Corbyn says, rolling his eyes playfully. "It's never 'nothing'."

"It's her birthday, that's all," I tell them, fighting the blush creeping up my neck.

"Someone's got a crush," Jack says, almost singing the words.

I roll my eyes. "Says you. What about Miss Gabbie Gonzalez?"

That shuts Jack right up, and we all crack up laughing before getting to our lockers.

"Oh, guys, by the way," Corbyn says. "That surgery is happening on the last weekend of October."

"That's so soon!" Zach says in surprise. "I thought it wasn't supposed to happen until, like, the middle of November!"

Corbyn shrugs. "It got moved up. Which I guess is a good thing." He sighs. "But now it's happening in like, three weeks."

"It is a good thing," I tell him as we all shut our lockers and head out to the parking lot. "Get it out of the way, right?"

"Dani's right," Jonah says.

"And we'll all be there for you," Jack adds.

"You guys don't have to come," Corbyn says. "Really."

"Shut up, Corbs," I say. "You know we wouldn't miss it for the world." The rest of the boys chorus in agreement.

Corbyn smiles. "Thanks guys."

We smile and race to our cars, beeping horns at each other until we're all out of sight.

☆☆☆

"You ready?" Zach asks, looking at the glass doors to the hospital.

"Nope," Corbyn sighs. "Let's go."

We've all ridden to the hospital with Corbyn and his parents. We told him we weren't missing his surgery, and we were true to our word.

We walk in, and Corbyn and his parents check in. We sit in a waiting room for all of ten minutes, and then a doctor comes out to get Corbyn.

"See you soon, buddy," I tell him, giving him a hug.

"See you guys," Corbyn answers, and I can't help but notice that he looks a little nervous. On his way back the hallway, he looks back at the rest of us, and we all give him goofy waves to help calm him down. It seems to work; he cracks a small smile before disappearing from view.

We all let out a collective sigh. And now we wait.
