HARPER'S POV
I feel like I'm trying to run underwater.
Everything is slow-moving and blurred, and ghost me is still separated from hospital me, and I'm still trying to will her awake. I promised Daniel I would fight, and that's exactly what I'm doing.
Ghost me doesn't rest. Two days go by, and it's Sunday when I start panicking. I have until tomorrow morning to get it together.
"Come on Harper," I mutter. "Wake up already."
Another few hours slip away, and I'm getting desperate. With a glance at the clock across the hall, I see that it's 6:30 AM on Monday morning. I sigh. Just as I'm about to give up and give in, I hear a faint ring, like someone is playing a dog whistle. Ghost me blinks, and suddenly, my eyes snap open and I'm whole again. There's no more ghost me, no more hospital me. The two pieces have merged back together, and I'm back as just one girl.
I'm awake. No more white room. No more silent voices.
As if on cue, the door opens, and five nurses walk into the room. Once they see me sitting there, wide-eyed and staring at them, they all stop short.
"Oh my God," one of them says. "Someone get Dr. Nelson."
They all rush out of the room like I combusted into flames, except for the nurse who told the others to get the doctor. She's young, maybe a few years out of college, and has green eyes. Her black hair is pulled into a low ponytail at the base of her neck, and she's wearing scrubs that match her eyes perfectly. "Harper Isabella Moon?"
"Y-yes?"
She smiles. "Okay, good sign." She clears her throat and says, "Harper, my name is Clara, and I'm a nurse here. Do you know where you are?" When Clara sees me gaping at her with a dumbfounded expression on my face, she laughs and says, "I just have to check to see what you know. It'll determine how much neurological testing Dr. Nelson has to do for you, okay?"
I nod. "I'm in the hospital."
"Good," Clara says, jotting something down on a clipboard. "Do you know which hospital? Or at least what city you're in?"
"Los Angeles," I respond. "I don't know which hospital though."
"That's okay," she says gently, making another note. "Do you know how you got here?"
I start to shake my head, and then the conversation between Daniel and the doctor comes back. My parents. "I don't remember much," I tell her, "but I remember I was with my parents. They were driving under influence." Clara raises an eyebrow, but doesn't say anything. "They took me to a party at gunpoint and forced me to drink and do drugs, the same as them. I didn't want to be like them." I realize there's a lump in my throat and I swallow before continuing. "They took me out to the car when I was drugged, and we were driving when my dad lost control of the car and crashed it. I blacked out and woke up here." I take a deep breath. I'm not sure if I should tell her that I had an out of body experience or not, if that's even the right term for it. In the end, I decide to just say, "That's all I remember."
Clara is writing furiously, and when she's finished, she clicks her pen closed and leans toward me. "Harper, I'm impressed. For someone who went through so much, you really remember a lot of it. I'm going to ask you a few more basic questions, and then Dr. Nelson is going to come talk to you, okay?"
I nod again, grateful for how understanding and calm she is. She reminds me so much of Hailey.
"Where do you live?"
"18 Sapphire Avenue, Los Angeles."
"What are your parents' names?"
"Jason and Tara Moon."
