DANIEL'S POV
I can't believe this. I can't believe she's here. I can't believe she's alive. I know I'm smiling like an idiot, and I don't even care.
"Woah, woah, woah. What happened to you?" Zach asks when I get to the cafeteria.
"You look like you're glowing, bro," Jack says, taking the opportunity of Zach being distracted to steal a chicken nugget off his lunch tray. "What happened? Did some girl hit you up?"
"Not just any girl," I reply, sitting down and somehow smiling bigger. "Harper. She's alive, and she's here, guys. And she knows that I was in the hospital with her. She told me that I saved her life."
It was like someone fired a gunshot. Instantly, the table goes silent, eyes on me, and all the boys are smiling hugely.
"What?" I ask innocently.
"Nothing," Corbyn says, smirking lightly. "Just you, finally getting the girl of your dreams."
I roll my eyes. "Yeah, right. She doesn't want to marry me because I talked to her unconscious body in a hospital room. Because, you know, that's not creepy at all."
"She doesn't seem to think so," Jonah remarks, nodding his head over to the door, where Harper and Kaylee just walked into the cafeteria. Harper's eyes are bright as she talks to Kaylee, and I don't think I've ever seen her so happy. When she sees us looking over at the two of them, she smiles as Kaylee turns around and waves.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" Zach says, shoving my shoulder. "Go!"
"Go...do what?"
"Ask her out, idiot!" Corbyn laughs, his eyes bright. "Come on, you're gonna miss your chance!"
"I don't know, guys," I say slowly. "She just went through hell and back. I don't want to mess with her head at all."
"Daniel, the fact that she held you back from leaving today says something," Jonah reminds me. "If you want this girl, go get her. What are you waiting for?"
And at that moment, I know Jonah is right. But as I glance around the room to see where she is, I realize Harper has disappeared - again. "Well," I sigh, leaning back in my seat. "I guess I'm waiting for tomorrow."
"Don't worry, tiger," Jack says, handing me one of Zach's chicken nuggets. "You'll get her."
☆☆☆
Turns out, I didn't have to wait for tomorrow.
I spot her almost immediately. Harper is standing at her locker, talking to Kaylee. When she sees me over Kaylee's shoulder, she says something, to which Kaylee turns around and sees me, too. Kaylee turns back to Harper, says something, and then leaves Harper standing there, shaking her head but smiling all the same.
"You know," I say when I get to her, leaning against the lockers. "You're a very hard person to get a hold of."
"So I've heard," she responds, smiling. "I'm just always gone, apparently."
"Harper Moon, the disappearing act," I say grandly. "I can see banners and billboards now."
"God, I hope not," she laughs, and it's a sound I want to hear over and over again.
"So I have a question for you," I say, twisting one of my rings around my finger.
"Don't ask me what went on in history today." Harper laughs again, shutting her locker door and leaning against it. "I was too busy trying to work out what I was going to say to you."
I laugh too, and some of the nervousness floats out of me. "No, no, it's not about that."
"Oh, okay," she says. "So then...what is this about?"
I look shyly back down at my hands, still playing with my ring. "Are you...are you busy on Saturday?"
Harper looks surprised for a split second, and then she smiles warmly. "Not at all. What did you have in mind?"
I smile too, and relief floods through me. "It's a surprise."
"Now you want to leave me in the dark? After everything?" Harper teases.
I laugh. "What can I say?" I smile and shrug. "I'm a man of mystery."
"Yeah, sure - man of mystery it is." She walks past me, still smiling, and nudges my shoulder. "See you later."
And just like that, Harper turns the corner and disappears. This time though, I know I'll be seeing her again.
