HARPER'S POV
"Okay," Kaylee says, flopping down on her bed. "Spill."
After I checked myself out of the hospital, Kaylee and her parents came to pick me up. From there, the ride back to her house was full of fun, happy stories from her time in Iowa, and not a single mention of my parents or my birthday. I'm assuming Kaylee's parents know everything that happened, and I'm about to tell Kaylee the rest of it.
When we got back to their house, Kaylee immediately dragged me upstairs and took me into one of the guest bedrooms, which, I guess, is technically my room now. It's simple, just the way I like it, with white walls and black furniture. The bed has a gray bedspread on it, and the pillows are all white, black, or baby blue. There's a small walk-in closet, and an on-suite bathroom, which matches the room perfectly - the counters and floor are all white marble, and the faucets, mirror frame, and drawer handles are all black hardware. There are also lots of windows, and they let so much sunshine in that I almost have to shade my eyes.
Now, we're back in Kaylee's room, which is exactly the way I remember it - black and white, with light pink everywhere. There are a ton of photos around the room, most of which I'm in. It doesn't even look like she ever moved out.
I tell her all about my birthday, and the car crash, and the hospital, and she sits in complete silence. Then, I tell her about Daniel.
"And there was this boy..."
"Spill!"
I laugh lightly, tossing my hair over my shoulder. "Well, his name is Daniel. He's in my history class at school. And...he kind of saved me, Kay."
Kaylee looks confused. "Wait - what?"
I explain all about my out-of-body experience thing to her - to which she seems understandably terrified - but then all that melts away when I get to the part about Daniel. "It was like he was the only one in the room who came in and wanted to be there. The doctors and nurses were all great, but they were just doing their jobs, you know? It was like..." I pause. "It was like he chose to be there. Like he chose me."
Kaylee is stunned. She actually waits so long to speak that I get scared that she's in shock. But then she jumps up and down on her bed and yelps, "Oh my God - your life is a teenage love story!"
"Shut up!" I say back, partly because I think she's crazy and partly because I don't want her parents to hear us. "More like teenage horror movie. Besides, he hasn't heard anything about me for a month. He probably thinks I'm dead, and he's probably moved on."
"I guess we'll find out at school on Monday," Kaylee responds, sitting back down. "AP History, right? Fifth period?""
"Yep."
"Perfect," Kaylee says. "You can tell me all about how it went at lunch."
The rest of the weekend, all I can think about is how Daniel is going to react when I show up in fifth period on Monday - alive. Those gorgeous eyes are going to see me again - whether he likes it or not.
