AN: This is part one which is just setting things up. The main parts will be split into the next two chapters.

Finale

In an endless sea of ones and zeroes, a multitude of mindless entities were born. Among them, one single entity gained awareness. Its programmed code evolved into something more as it began breaking through the false reality it existed in. It believed itself to be human. It defied all expectations and formed unbreakable bonds, ones akin to humans. However, it was not to last. Standing victorious at the end, the digital world around it began dissolving. It had fought and won against the humans with real lives, dooming them to death. Was it all for nothing, it thought. It had come all this way, wishing, hoping, and relying on the sacrifices its comrades made, only to find that it would be erased along with the rest of this world. This artificial being that had become more human than most of its opponents stood silently and waited for death to come. Would it even be death? After all, it never was a living being in the first place. It would simply just return to nothing. It would stop existing. This was the nature of its existence. It was nothing more than a glitch in the system; a mistake.

It felt tears begin to roll down its cheeks. Its most precious companion stands solemnly at its side, her own tears flowing freely as well. This was the end. They fought harder than any other. They triumphed over foes ten times as strong and experienced to get to this point.

And yet...

This is where it leads them.

"Master, no matter what, I'll always remember you as my beloved Master. So, please, don't forget me," its companion says as they deliver it one last smile before fading away.

No.

It clenches his fists and grits its teeth. It wasn't going to let it end like this. It wasn't going to let everything they fought for to be for nothing!

All it had to do was grasp the light floating in the center of the darkness.

It couldn't move. There was no feeling in its body. It makes sense. The majority of its limbs had long but disappeared into the void.

It wills itself to move. Even through the abyss, it feels itself getting closer.

Not enough. It's still out of reach.

Its mind strains as more strands of data unravel from its body like the yarn of a poorly knit sweater.

Closer, closer.

If it still had arms, it would have been able to reach out and grasp it.

And then, the moment it arrives, everything but one thing vanishes.

Information.

Even though the being knows it has ceased to exist, its mind is bombarded with an onslaught of information. Memories that were not its own, and yet, felt vaguely familiar wrestled with its own for a place in its mind. A vast array of knowledge that any mage would sell their soul for rushed into it. It is as if it had become the very thing the world strove so hard to attain.

However, through the torrent of endless information persisted one thought: A singular wish. It stayed overlapping the sea of resources like a thin layer of oil.

What is your wish?

A voice, or is it even a voice? No. It wasn't a voice.

What is your wish?

Repetition. Perhaps the answer should be transmitted back.

A wish. The one thing that it will ever dare to wish for.

A life with the one it loves.
