Investigation

Cameras flashed as the the town's coroner and my partner took pictures of the dead teenage girl's body. What a gruesome way to go. My stomach turned as I stared at the girl's lifeless eyes. Dried blood pooled all around her body, soaking into her uniform and staining it crimson. The origin of the blood is without a doubt from the small hole through her neck.

Taking a calming breath, I close my eyes and begin to recompile the information we had already gathered. The dead is Yukari Sakuragi, a girl attending Yomiyama North Middle School and a student of class 3-3. According to the witnesses, a girl and a boy, she tripped down the stairs while carrying her umbrella. Through some freak coincidence the umbrella fell tip up in front of her and she ended up impaling herself on it.

My eyes travel to the pair of students who were being questioned by another officer. The girl's name is Mei Misaki, I think. Her skin is extremely pale albeit smooth, and her raven black hair frames her doll-like face beautifully. Strangely enough she's wearing a white medical eye patch over her left eye. I find myself staring at her for a bit too long before I catch myself and avert my gaze. The boy is Kouichi Sakakibara. Whereas Mei seems to have an almost otherwordly beauty to her, Kouichi is quite average in looks. Something about her just seems to draw me in.

Despite the gloomy aura seemingly emanating from Mei, I doubt the either of them would've pushed the victim down the stairs. Still, even if they did I doubt their intention was to kill her.

Then there's the fact that Yukari Sakuragi's mother died earlier today in a car accident. It seemed her car hydroplaned causing her to lose control and smash into a tree. What's even stranger, though, is that a branch had impaled her neck and was dubbed the cause of her death.

"Detective (L/N). You can take a look at the body now."

Drawn out of my thoughts by the old man's voice, I nod at the coroner before taking a deep breath and kneel down next to the body. I offer a silent prayer for the dead girl and begin patting around her body. The only visible wound is the puncture through the neck. Other than that she seems to be fine. Her phone was lying under her body. According to witness testimonies she received a call informing her that her mother was dead, and as a result she rushed out. Turning on the screen, I check through the recent callers and confirm that the last call she received was from her mother's brother.

A heavy sigh escapes from my lips as I shake my head. This case was looking pretty cut and dry. A mother died in a car accident, when her daughter received the news she was devastated. In her rush to get home, she slipped and fell down the stairs and the umbrella she was carrying killed her. No signs of foul play. Until we can get statements from the rest of the students and faculty, this case is going to be ruled an accident.

Jeez. The last thing I expected when I got transferred over to this backwater town is for this to happen.

Pushing myself onto my feet, I take out a small plastic bag out of my pocket and drop the dead girl's phone into it before handing it off to my partner.

"Take another look around, Keiichi. When you're done, tell the medics to get the body out of here. I'm going to go talk to the witnesses."

The poor guy looks like he's about to throw up, but nods regardless.

Disposing of my gloves,I walk up to the pair of students and dismiss the officer watching over them.

"Detective (Y/N) (L/N)" I say while showing them my badge. "If you don't mind, I'd like to ask you two some questions."

"R-Right, sure," Kouichi mutters shakily.

Surprisingly enough Mei looks none the worse for wear. Her expression is blank and she almost seems bored if not for the intense stare she's giving me with her one eye.

"The deceased is Yukari Sakuragi. She was a classmate of yours, correct? What was your relationship with her?"

"She is - was a friend," Kouichi answers.

"A classmate."

I glance at Mei for her cold response. It's almost as if she didn't even care that a classmate of hers just died.

"Alright... Now, can you two tell me the details of what happened?"

"Well," Kouichi starts. "Misaki and I were talking after class when Sakuragi suddenly rushes out of the classroom talking on her phone. I think she was saying 'What do you mean mom is dead?'. When she saw us, she suddenly freaked out and ran away. I ran after her, worried, and when I got to the stairs I... she..."

The boy trails off, unable to finish the sentence.

"I see. Thank you."

The story checks out. No inconsistencies from what I was told earlier. I look at Mei who simply stares back.

"A curse," she says.

I blink once at her sudden announcement. "I'm sorry, what?"

"A curse," she repeats.

"Um... What do you mean?"

Unfortunately she doesn't say anything more than that, before I can ask her again I hear my name being called.

"Alright, fine. Make sure you contact the station if you have anything more to say."

As I turn to leave, I catch Mei staring at me again. A shiver runs down my spine when our gazes meet. I shake my head and tear my eyes away from the young girl, heart hammering in my chest.

No. No way. There's just no way.
